Troy believes that expressing his like for his child is unnecessary, as he is already providing his child with a house, food, and resources. I agree with the idea that a parent should primarily provide their child with these resources, but I believe that the role of a parent could be more than that, and should be more than that. Although "liking" someone is not fully necessary, I disagree with Troy's belief that he has already done his job and will do nothing more. I believe that the role of a parent is to not only provide, but to also care for their child. As can be seen throughout Fences, Troy is cold and harsh towards Cory, demonstrating a lack of a bond or love between them. Nevertheless, Troy still goes out to his terrible job so he can get money to support Cory and Rose. Additionally, many of Troy's actions, while somewhat cruel and meanspirited, are in Cory's best interests (like when Troy forced Cory to stop playing football because of the segregation in sports, meaning Cory would end up failing regardless of talent). I view a parent as a support structure, helping their child if necessary, but not being overbearing. They're meant to allow their child to figure out life without being completely alone, whether that be in a financial sense or literally one, even when they've grown up. Providing a house, food, and other necessities is as far as a parent is obliged to go, no bond or love needed. This view is quite different from my own opinion on the role of the parent. I still agree that a parent must satisfy their families physical needs, but a little bit more is required. A parent should facilitate the growth of their child, provide support and help to keep them from bad habits. Caring for a child and expressing love are also very important, this lets them know they aren't alone. Parent should try and educate their children on the world, but not in an overbearing, narrowminded sense. A parent should also teach their child life lessons, and help them become a better person.
