I interviewed my sister.
We talked about the normalcy of technology/implementation of technology in everyday life.

She only started needing technology and the internet, in middle school. The reason we got the internet was for educational purposes and back then it was all it was really useful for as it was too slow for anything else. Before then we didn't have wifi or a computer.

She used to go to the library and it was like an information hub, using books for information. Back then she was a more avid reader but as things shifted toward a virtual environment, the need to go there physically was no longer necessary.

Parents had flip phones as well and saw no need to have internet or connection to it with smartphones.

While she was tutoring in high school at a local tutoring center, she saw that elementary students did school work online whereas she never did that kind of stuff in elementary school. It made her realize how much has changed from when she was a kid doing everything on pen and paper.

In 5th grade, she had a project to do on Rosa Parks and it was done online so she ended up getting internet at home. And having internet was amazing to her even though each page of information took a minute to load. It was new and unbelievable that the information would just pop up if they waited long enough. And if something takes 10 seconds to load now it’s insane. To do her project without going to the library for information was new as well.

The societal change that we discussed was when Dalai Lama came to speak in New York City and how he managed to spread his message out to 40 thousand people.
-I learned who Dalai Lama was
- I learned that meditating daily reduces stress, lower blood pressure, and anxiety
-I learned that people in New York City can stop and listen quietly. In his speech that had over 40,000 people there it was silent other than Dalai Lama speaking. This never happens in the city

Now, women and men are in the workfield and either can provide for the family or work.

Back then, society favored the white straight males and any other race or gender was discriminated against, but now even though there is no denying systemic racism, there is a lot less discrimination than there was back then.

Back then, society was less dependent on modern technology and relied more on manpower, for example cars weren’t that well used, so people decided to use bikes more, and google wasn’t a thing and people had to use libraries. And now in society everyone is so dependent on electronics, we need them in our lives for daily tasks such as school and transportation.

Back then people were less free in their expression of themselves, before having a different sexuality or gender or having ‘radical ideas’ could have gotten you killed, but now everyone can be themselves, express their own feelings and thoughts on a situation without risking any consequences.

My cousin had been born and raised in India until about 5 years ago he moved to the US. It was a completely different environment that he was unfamiliar with. Different people, different rules, different settings, etc. The house he was living in itself was so different from india. People were very poor and kept to themselves/their families.the government itself had been pretty messed up and no where near as politically advanced as the US. Compared to his neighborhood in India, where everyone was North asian, it was completely different with the houses, people, and especially policy changes including rules and laws
- there is lots of poverty in India and the government doesn't help them financially unlike here
- there is a very low standard of living which also connects to the previous one
- People have several rights here and are free to express themselves (politically too) which is uncommon in India since they don't have much freedom.

She mentioned how there wasn't really any Hispanic or Spanish speaking people who could translate, so she had to rely on relatives who could already speak Spanish. Examples that she gave were the hospital and how she couldn't really speak to anyone in there.
This relates to having Hispanic people around as well, but she also spoke about how it was a culture shock coming to NYC.
