She attends a cancer support group that eventually leads her to meet Augustus Waters. Throughout the novel, Hazel and Augustus become friends and open up to each other about their cancer journeys. Hazel is fighting thyroid cancer that had spread to her lungs causing her to not be able to breathe on her own. Augustus was in remission (when they first met.) As the novel progresses it is obvious that Hazel is falling for Augustus but she is afraid of falling in love if she is just going to die.

Hazel introduces the book, "An Imperial Affliction" to Augustus. She explains to him the meaning and why she loves it so much. Augustus ends up tracking down the author, whom Hazel loves and admires, and sets up a plan with his secretary to come out to the Netherlands to meet him. Despite Hazel's medical complications, the two teens take a trip of a lifetime to the Netherlands to meet author Peter Van Houten. You will feel emotionally invested into the characters.
