Pinterest has served as a visual art board for myself and my friends for over five years. With the sharability of boards, as well as the creative freedom you have when pinning, it seems to be the pinnacle of social media for many young women in particular. Pinterest, because it has been in my life for so long, offers an insight into large milestones as I passed them. From moving in to my first apartment, to getting my law firm job, large changes in my life can easily be tracked.

Pocket

Pocket on the other hand serves a much more informational purpose. Creating a social media website that looks similar to Pinterest, but functions in a more newspaper or magazine type fashion is a great way to spread information to younger audiences. The actual information curated by Pocket can be more serious than those on Pinterest, existing in a way that is meant to inform, rather than only visualize. With Pocket, you are more engaged with the actual material, not just pinning the cover photo.

Each of the choices made in creating this updated policy were done with the 5Rights in mind, as well as my personal experience on social media platforms. Being able to remove my own content that I upload is important for many reasons; mistakenly posting something and old posts that may not reflect who you are anymore just to name a couple. This is crucial in ensuring that a platform reflects what a person wants to show themselves. Data sharing is also a major issue, so making sure that users have the choice in what data can be shared and to whom was important when writing this. A support hotline is something that exists now, but could be greatly improved with some training and efficiency on the company end. Similar to data sharing, customizations of your own personal use of the platform are important for ensuring conscious use. Finally, education is the main way to support digital literacy, so providing those resources to users in an easily accessible way was incorporated into this policy.
