This piece shows an important emperor to the Byzantine Empire, Emperor Justinian. He recorded all of Roman law. This code (known as Justinian's Code) lad the bases for many European codes of law. He also expanded the Byzantine Empire and gathered up most of the land that was part of Rome (side note, the Byzantines thought of themselves as the new Roman Empire, they LOVED the Roman Empire). You can also (hopefully) see that this piece is made up of many smaller chucks, well this is called a mosaic. A mosaic is when an artist uses little pieces of glass to make a larger image.

This painting is known as a fresco. a fresco is when an artist paints on a wall plaster as it dries. The idaea is that the wet wall will pick up the dyes in the pant and stay on the wall for MUCH longer than just painting on the wall when it is dry. This painting is also an icon, which is when a holy figure in the catholic church is depicted in a piece of art. most icons are of Jesus, Mary, an apostle, and/or one of the sants. On a side note, the Byzantines like to show concepts that are invisible to the naked eye, and one way to show that is by having someone that is close to god have a ring around their head.

This painting is of the last emperor of Rome and first emperor of the Byzantine Empire, Emperor Constantine! See, the second to last emperor of Rome, Diocletian, decided to split the empire into two. Diocletian got one half (the one with the city of Rome), and Constantine got the other half. Constantine decided to set up a new capital in Constantinople. In a few years, Diocletian's half of Rome was conquered, which left Constantine's half standing. He declared what is left of Rome the Byzantine Empire, and the rest is history.
