The difference between the photos in f/1.8 and f/8 that I see are with f/1.8, if you want only the subject or something in particular in focus, you can achieve that. I would choose f/1.8 for food photography because it gives the photos a kinda cool effect. 

A few key things I picked up about food photography are that having fresh food is always a must because a picture of like an old rotten tomato isn't very appealing. The pomegranate we used to take photos was fresh and looking good to eat. Another thing that's important is point of view. If you take any photo at an awkward angle, it's not going to be a good photo.
