This will be the space to post the week's writings, notes, and other sharing(s) that will be authored for the course. While this is an open space, it is not meant to be the site of submission for assignments. Instead, it is a space for students to come into conversation and offer ideas to others in the course.

Literacy is a socially constructed practice in that it reflects both the social and cultural identities of those practicing that specific form of literacy. In Gee’s description of the term “discourse”, he states that discourse is a way of communicating within a given “ socially meaningful group or social network”. He goes on to state that discourses may vary based upon our individual circumstances, including discourses practiced when “ being a man or a woman, being an American or Russian, being a member of a certain socioeconomic class,”. Through my own time as a student in New York City public schools and now as a teacher, I’ve noticed that students mold their own discourses based on their age, cultural backgrounds, neighborhoods, and general school settings. Working throughout the city you can easily see this contrast, and picking up on these differences is crucial to fostering an inclusive classroom. It’s the responsibility of the teacher to create a curriculum which is culturally relevant, and builds upon the unique knowledge each student brings into the classroom. In particular, if we are to build a sense of civic duty within our students, we must allow them to feel seen and acknowledged in our classrooms, in order to than encourage their agency within their communities.

Minecraft, Memes and Communication

I’ve never really liked video games much. This set me apart a long time ago. I had nothing to do at friends’ houses when other kids showed up and it turned into game time. I’d sit waiting for it to be over mostly, because if it was my turn to play, my time would be up quickly. Since I did not have any system at home, it was impossible to build any skill, and as they became more advanced, I watched the graphics go from looking nothing like the pictures on the box to what we have now. Games are basically interactive movies with soundtracks that become as well known as anything else out there. Or maybe games and culture have become so intertwined that it is impossible to separate them from each other.

Outdated perspective? What has been lost may have given me an edge. It is the edge of being an outsider with an anthropologist’s non judgemental viewpoint. I don’t play games, but I enjoy gaming culture.

A few years back I discovered the Youtube gamer encoded channel, “Hey Ash Whatcha Playin’?”, and now see Ashley Burch as a recognized comedian who can still go “deep gamer” within her community or on another level, the discourse of gaming. James Gee could add that in a sense, I missed out on the “acquisition and learning” of video games. I cannot participate in the discourse of gaming because I did not learn it as it developed, and now it is unlikely that I will ever be part of it. But I am able to observe changes in the way that kids communicate in reference to gaming culture. As an observer, I do not need to know the rules, since I am not interacting within it.

Last summer at an arts focused camp for children aged 7-11, I noticed a difference in the way the kids have been using Legos. When given 20 minutes of free time in the morning, many of these children built with a curious similarity. They were organizing all the colors so that one structure would be completely blue, another all pink. I remember being the same age and using all different colors to build with. I don’t think anyone sorted them out before starting to make something. This new kind of selected construction is a pattern I have noticed among kids roughly the same age for the past few years. Could it be that the combination of squamous forms and sectioned colors in Minecraft and Roblox has unexpectedly trained children in a new kind of design thought? Within the video game discourse, kids have gotten so used to the pixilated angular style of both Minecraft and Roblox that it may be blending with their sense of aesthetics and for a time, reality. Also of interest was my students’ repeated request for “Lazy Sunday”, a song from Bloxburg Boombox in Roblox. The actual track originated as library music, a genre only known by the most dedicated crate diggers. Library music was background music recorded by studio musicians in the 1970’s. It should have no context with children today. The song is nothing special, and it was not intended to be. Gee writes, “The individual instantiates, gives body to, a discourse every time he acts or speaks and thus carries it and ultimately changes it through time.”Gee et al, p 3. Background is background is background. However for the time, the song is on the playlist as much as anything from the enormously popular Disney film, “Encanto”. I recognize Lazy Sunday as sounding “Late-60s/Early 70’s” and I see Roblox as clunky compared to other graphics, but to these students, it is all very important in a way I do not comprehend.

Amidst all this aesthetic discussion lies a deeper meaning within the context of language, literacy and communication. Searching, “Minecraft Memes” on Google reveals a top 10 list as you would expect, which we know is probably not the real stuff because it comes up right away. By the “real stuff”, I mean something that would resonate with middle school children at the current time, not last month. These lists are usually a little behind the wave. One of the only “15 Best Minecraft Memes” I could get without being indcoctrinated to the game shows some kind of portal.

In this meme, I would probably be the teacher who describes our reality governed by physics where everything is finite. The Minecraft gamer of a younger age can recognize that within the constructs of the player’s world, this does not apply. Kids who play individually constructed world games like Minecraft are making their own spaces. They are building their own worlds. In this sense, they are building their own reality. The generator depicted in the meme can supply an unlimited amount of blocks for the player. The possibilities are endless within the discourse of Minecraft. This aligns with concepts of futurism and new attitudes about science fiction.
Critical Literacy : Memes

Ben Jaffe

Meme Blog # 2

10/06/2022

Memes and Critical Literacy

What are memes? Let us focus in on the most bare bones of definitions we can find. A “meme”, according to Wikipedia, is “an element of a culture or system of behavior that may be considered to be passed from one individual to another by nongenetic means, especially imitation”(“Meme”2022). Long before anyone manipulated an image in photoshop, memes have existed as a form of literacy. We can leave out a large piece of history here to ensure that this blog posting will be read by the class. Making a jump, most people are familiar with the brand, “OBEY”, a clothing label started by artist and designer Shepard Fairey.

The ubiquitous face of WWF wrestler, “Andre the Giant” with the simple moniker below it became popular in skateboarder circles and blossomed into an arguable mainstream presence. The name of the brand is taken directly from John Carpenter’s 1988 horror sci-fi satire-comedy film, They Live. In the context of the film, “OBEY” was a command to be followed by an oblivious, mind numbed public and was a criticism of increasing commercialization during the Reagan era. The re-contextualized word as a brand humorously poked fun at those in on the joke, but then over time, the context changed. It simply became a name brand on clothing to be printed, sold and worn. Was the joke lost? Did anyone care?

Current memes are notoriously hard to track. They can become layered with context and meaning as they change hands. Overtime, an image that begins as carrying one meaning to be read by a social group can be flipped by another group. The consequences of such actions may render the original message lost forever. This can remind everyone to check and re-check before posting. You never know the impact an image can have. Navigating the turbulent waters of meme decoding comes with potential risk. In the interest of finding subject matter that relates to people aged 11-15, I will analyze memes that involve “Spongebob Squarepants”. The character’s distinctive stuttering laugh and at times overly positive naivete add up to fit the character into many meme contexts. Let me explain. If you know the cartoon, as many middle schoolers might, you can almost hear Spongebob when you see the image. Memes must have an element of being immediately recognizable in at least one aspect. Otherwise they are visual white noise. The meme shown below can be categorized as critical literacy for youth because of several factors. It utilizes a character kids already know. Spongebob will be “read” and recognized instantly across multiple cultures and languages.

As a critical literacy tool, this meme depicts what kids are told to do and expresses humor about the outcome of following such example. Misconceptions young adults have about being on their own and how great that will be show themselves as opposite. Grueling day jobs, financial problems and what can be interpreted as depression all hit like a wall. This kind of meme can be understood by both teens and adults. The fun of Spongebob is sucked out by reality. But it is a criticism of how that reality is determined by the adults in the life of the younger people. There is nothing to look forward to except an occasional Arizona Iced Tea. A second meme shows Spongebob with way too many limbs grasping desperately at too many activities. “Me at Online School” speaks across cultural lines. Most middle schoolers would be able to relate to this one. Again there is the idea of what is supposed to be happening and what actually is happening. Critical literacy is part of this meme in the sense that “online school” is titled and expected to occur. The student turns on the computer, logs into the zoom classroom, and then is instantly surrounded by a multitude of distractions which are speculated to contribute to a frenzied state. This state is hardly a space for learning. The structures in place are attempting to regulate one thing, and the meme breaks it down. The world just isn’t like that.

Throughout human history, we continuously revolutionized how we spread information. However, nothing has become more influential than the internet. As the internet has been ever-evolving, so has the way we have used it to consume media. As of recent, one of the most popular methods is the production of memes, and the gorilla grip memes have on pop culture has not gone unnoticed. From memes czars of internet subcultures to prominent politicians, memes have made their way to the front of the media. While memes started out as a form of relatable and satirical content, memes are now a source of news and information for many, and this prospect scares me. For the most part, memes are anonymous and generally appeal to specific audiences; at their best, they provide relatable content for small groups to enjoy. At their worst, they present misinformation that can radicalize individuals and normalize hate speech to the youth. During the 2020 elections, internet trolls from Russia were able to use memes in an attempt to influence and deceive social media users as a method to sway united states electoral votes. Many right-wing conservative groups have used memes to villainize democratic politicians and vulnerable people. The most recent examples are those within the LGBTQ, during recent political movements aimed at slashing the civil liberties of queer folk. As our students have increasing internet access, they are exposed to these sources of information more frequently and are more vulnerable to sources of misinformation.

Critical literacy is defined as the learning approach students must take where they are expected to examine various texts to understand the relationship between language and the power it can hold. I have seen critical literacy in the example of questions, more specific context-based questions that were assigned to us when we were younger. We were assigned a book to read and after reading that book we were given a selection of questions. The questions were very thought-provoking, an example is "who are the intended readers of this book, who is the audience or why do you think this book was written? The questions asked always make you closely analyze the wording and language used in the book and see how it connects to the real world. The example of the who is the intended audience makes you think of what group or demographic or audience is the book trying to reach out to and who would it most be beneficial to.

I like to think the memes I’ve attached to this post are instantly relatable to any black person who has grown up in America. Yet, when considering our class discussion my opinion shouldnt be applied to each black person I meet. However, the meme that features the idea of saying “lie” instead of “telling a story” speaks to what our black ancestors held in their hearts as they navigated the world. For many black americans religion be that christianity or islam is prominet in their young lives. In these teachings we stress that not only lying is a sin but we identify the devil as a liar. To dive even deeper many black people refer to white people as devils because of slavery and many other historical facts. Which in turn, causes our grandmas to take offense when you call someone else a liar, because you are grouping them in the same group as the devil, a sinner, and white people. While we as young black people may laugh, it is something that you would truly have to be born into to understand.

The second meme featuring the Jiffy cornbread and ramen noodles is another attempt of black people laughing at our struggle. Many black people are not wealthy and with the absence of wealth there is an obvious struggle for food. Jiffy cornbread can be bought at one dollar per pack and ramen is only thirty three cents per pack. Even to this day if I ever needed a meal and had one dollar to my name, I know I can get two packs of noodles and make it through the night.

What memes speak to critical youth literacies and insider/outsider knowledge? Share on course Padlet.

I have seen some examples of UDL in my fieldwork. An example of it is that students continually recieve feedback from the teacher on their work and more specifically about their perfomance in the classroom. It keeps students up to date on how they are doing. I also do personally think it is effective because it establishes a relationship with students knowing that the teacher cares about their indivudal performance rather than neglecting them. Another form of UDL i have seen is the implementation of digital audio in the classroom for students. Some students might not be able to see things well enough so audio help fill in that gap.

The first time I heard of the principles of UDL, I thought it sounded almost pretty intuitive. However, examining my own experience as a learner, I compared and contrasted what I remember of my instruction to these principles. I was a kid with a pretty heavy IEP that I took all the way to college, so my work was constantly being differentiated. However, we know the process of differentiation goes well beyond learning differences; the process allows teachers to reach across different ability levels, cultures, and learning styles. I have been lucky enough to work with a curriculum that already tries to apply UDL in its attempts for differentiation. Amplify science is a very comprehensive curriculum that outlines differentiation strategies for multi-language learners, students who need more of a challenge, and for students with varying learning differences. Beyond that, the science program tries really hard to showcase scientists of as many cultural backgrounds as possible as an attempt not only to be representative of its learners but encourage students who historically have not seen themselves reflected in STEM careers. However, because UDL stresses accommodations for all students, it requires the teacher to get to know their students first. Not just their preferred learning style but their background and interests as well. In doing so, one is able to make a class more engaging. I currently have students from 6th to 8th grade, so my current 8th-grade class I've known my for three years. Because of that, I've been able to form relationships that help shape the classroom, but I wonder how that would be different from having them in a more traditional learning environment.

How are you making sense of the last two weeks of readings? In what ways, if any, do Queer, Quare, and Trans youth literacies explore, expand, and cultivate in your classroom?

I made sense of the readings when I looked at how Week 10 has more of a focus on themes of diversity and inclusion based on its texts. I looked at Week 9s focus on education in the classroom concerning culturally relative pedagogy, also concerning different topics in the classroom like history, science and also incorporating some ideas of diversity talking about racism. The trans youth literacies give me the idea that diversity needs to be promtoed in the classroom to create a safe space for students. Inclusion is an important factor that needs to be established.

Being a queer educator is interesting. I have mentioned this before, but I work in a very small charter school above a church. We are incredibly resourced challenged and barely scraped by to make it through our renewal year. When I started, we did not have a social worker, which was very apparent. A staggering amount of kids were self-harming, depressed, and contemplating suicide. Emotionally, the pandemic hit very hard for a lot of these students. What amazed me, though, was their ability to identify their feelings at such a young age so accurately. All these kids needed was someone to listen, especially the queer ones.

As I said, my school is very small; however, more and more students have started to explore their sexual and gender identities each year, causing admin to have conversations they have yet to have. Unfortunately, as a queer person, it's kind of painful to watch four straight people talk about when it is appropriate for a child to discuss their queerness and what role and influences their parents should have in that conversation. We have grown as a school for sure, and theres a growing body of self-identifying queer staff members who have fought on behalf of our kids. However, there is still a push and pull. I am a science teacher; my sexuality has nothing to do with my job. Yet, my role as a queer person has influenced my interactions with my students more than I would ever expect. I have had admin send me kids who have just come out, and they don't know what to do with them (which is incredibly inappropriate as I am a teacher, not a therapist). I have kids tell me how their parents no longer speak to them because of their queerness; I've also had students track down my ex-boyfriend and circulate his photo around the school. In short, being a queer educator is straight-up weird and also so so so so important. Queer kids need to see queer people interacting with straight people and being respected by straight people. Straight kids need to see that queer folk exist and are no different from any other human they encounter. I guess that's my version of cultivating this space.

I think that the biggest takeaway from the readings from the past few weeks is making sure that your classroom is as inclusive and comfortable as possible. These are young fragile minds that are still figuring out the world and looking for help and guidance, and as teachers we have a responsibility to our students to try to give them whatever they need to create and grow their identities both in and out of the classroom. I think that creating space in the classroom for conversations about queer and trans identities is incredibly important because it can make students more knowledgable and understanding. Ignoring important topics like this and leaving students in the dark can lead to kids who struggle to form identities. Inclusion in the classroom is a vital component of creating a space where student want to be and learn.

Well to my knowledge there isn’t any trans or queer people in the classroom I am observing, and there isn't anything yet that has been any material that was LGBTQ+ inclusive, so instead I will turn my attention to how I would conduct my own classroom. It goes without saying that hate speech of any kind will not be tolerated. But deeper than that, I found a good point in the "Pedagogy, Culture, and Society" article that said that we need to remove assignments and problems that create single gender situations, instead always assuming there are multiple gender identities in the classroom. Since I will be conducting an English classroom of my own, I believe that it is important that I incorporate the works of trans and queer authors, while striving to be neutral in the use of pronouns. The idea of a feminine male and a masculine female will not be a hidden topic, as some students may not feel that they fit in to the stereotypical gender norm, and they will grow to learn that it is okay and perfectly acceptable.

Going through the readings on queer literacies, the Blackburn piece resonated as it highlights the sometimes complicated relationship we have as educators who work with students for a period of several years, as students continue to grow and learn more about themselves, we may at times find it difficult to keep up with their personal journeys, subsequently putting us at risk of using language which fails to recognize their true self “I use language they use. This is complicated in that I have spent a lot of time with them; they described themselves in different ways over the course of a semester (not to mention in the years we have been in touch since). Another complication is that sometimes the words they used did not align with how those words are typically used, whether colloquially or academically. Reasons for this may be simple, like the vocabulary may have been new to them; or the reasons might be complicated, like they may have been struggling with internalised hatred. “ (Blackburn 2021). In my experience working in schools, a common and somewhat frustrating example of this occurs almost everyday in the form of daily or period roll calls. In more than several instances I have referred to students with names that either deny their gender identity or gender expression, because schools have not addressed these issues on an administrative level. Only when I have teachers who take the simple extra step of making sure I know students preferred names have I been able to avoid this mistake. Blackburn references this common example of cisnormativity in K-12 schools. With that said, Ive also experienced expanded inclusive spaces as an educator in NYC which I do not remember existing as student. The prominence of GSA has seemingly granted students the open space to express themselves, while also addressing issues that may not be covered in their traditional classroom spaces. Though these youth literacies may be cultivated in NYC and other large cities throughout the country, its clear that work needs to be continued in areas where these students are further on the margins.

I wanted to discuss the relevant pedagogy going on in my classroom. I find it very important that there is a semblance of student culture that goes on sometimes in class discussion or one on one interaction. It does make students more engaged in the classroom in my opionion, it makes them think that teachers care about them and their circumstances, as well as whats going on in their daily lives. Teachers also benefit from this because they know where students are coming from, and how best to go about helping them in any way shape or form that they can in the classroom.

My fieldwork this semester was a bit of a mess. I was in one school where they had me observing 4 different teachers throughout the day and 6 different classes. It was a very interesting way to observe and I honestly think that's how student observations should be conducted. Obviously, that means getting consent from a bunch of teachers but being able to see how different teachers teach and interact with their students is so much more valuable when you can compare them to the teacher before. I felt I was able to figure out what aspects I would like to include in my classrooms and some things I definitely wouldn't want in my classroom. However, that fieldwork was cut short due to complications with another class, but now I'm in a new school and it's very interesting and different from what I've experienced before, which is nice. One of the best things about NYC schooling is the wide range of different schools and focuses for learning. I hope to continue to be able to take in as much as I can in my future fieldwork observations.

However, there's still a lot to unpack here, and I'm going to take this blog post as a moment to be a bit more cathartic than it might have been intended to be. I got my graduate degree in climate science from Columbia University; I had no idea I would be teaching. Honestly, it wasn't even a thing that I'd even considered before. I always thought I would be doing something more policy-related, maybe working for an NGO like Oceana (my dream since middle school). Then the pandemic hit, and all climate-related jobs disappeared, and understandably so. No one knew the extent the pandemic was going to reach. However, I didn't expect Columbia to kind of just push us out the door and cut their losses. One day I was in Butler library, and the next, I was practically in a chat roulette room with a professor who didn't know how to turn his mic on. What I thought would be an investment in my future turned out to be a hundred thousand dollars in debt to be stuck in a zoom waiting room half the time.
I digress; the point is teaching wasn't on my radar. I realized I wanted to teach when I started helping with a climate literacy course. I noticed how bad scientists are at talking about science to people who don't know science. So, I started a non-profit with some friends to make a climate change curriculum for people who are bad at science. There's certainly a better elevator pitch, but that's the short version. Fast forward a few months, I found myself at a charter school that hasn't had a science class in two years, teaching over zoom for the first time in the pandemic. The reason im telling this whole story is because I haven't escaped the feeling of drowning ever since. I love teaching; I really do. However, I just can't tell if I think people who do this for their entire lives are just sadists. With the hoops you have to jump through even to get certified, you would think teaching was one of the most well-paid jobs in America. Instead, it's one of the most tiring, under-appreciated, and underpaid jobs I could think of. I recently had a child tell me I was his father figure; I've had him for three years, so I know him well, but that wasn't cute. That statement was terrifying; I barely keep a dog alive. I want to teach, and I enjoy it, but I just can't tell if it is practical in the long run. Im too tired to be this young

I am doing my fieldwork in a Religious Education program, observing an 8th grade teacher. I have the required amount of hours but will continue to attend every Saturday until their school year ends. Part of the reason is because the program is hosted in the school that I went to middle school at, leading me to enjoy my experience there mixed with a little nostalgia. The teacher I observe is very friendly and accommodating to me. I have more of a hands-on experience, not necessarily instructing the class, but I get to do more than just observe, and I am working 1 on 1 oftentimes with students. However, this doesn't mean I don’t have burnout. Not specifically from this fieldwork, but when you put everything together. Managing college courses, my job, the fieldwork, family, and other personal relationships. It makes me wonder if the life of an actual teacher will be any easier. Will it be more difficult? Will the pay be enough to compensate for struggles? Will I grow as a person through this and shape children's futures for the better? All questions I sit and ponder from time to time.

How do we utilize theory, experiences, and practices to cultivate and (re)design our teaching practice?

We can utilize experiences and practices to re-design our practice by applying what we have seen to our classrooms. I think an example is when we look at our own teaching styles and experienes in the classroom. We should take a more self reflective look at the work we have done and ask some questions. A few questions one could ask is "is my teaching culturally relevant?, "can students relate to me?". I think when you ask questions like these you would get a better idea of how to implement different strategies in becoming a more effective teacher. An effective teacher is not only one who excels in the academic material being broachedt o students but also excels in the socio- cultural relationships between themselves and the students in the classroom.

I’ve always wanted to highlight the “problem child” in any academic discussion. These children we constantly have to tell to stop talking, interrupting the class, or arguing with the teacher. It's often complex and not an issue that can be solved with a face value solution. My interest particularly comes from me being the problem child myself. I often argued with teachers, talked the whole period, and interrupted the teacher if I disagreed and some teachers were scared of me. They would often say things like Demargo does all of his work but we can't get him to stop interrupting the class. Took me a while to figure out but I simply was not being challenged. I enjoyed learning so much I would take the text books home and steal the class templates and do them weeks ahead. I had no problem doing homework and enjoyed the struggle of not understanding something. So naturally when class time came there was nothing else for me to do besides cause chaos.

Within my recent visits to my highschool I've come across this young man named Alexis. In every class he constantly talks and interrupts the teacher if he doesn't agree with something .However, he was never afraid to share his work and completed everything 30-40 minutes before his peers. Sometimes he would purposely come late to class because he knew he only needed 20 minutes to complete work that took some the whole period. I spoke with the head teachers of each classroom and asked what they can do in a situation like this. They all simply said nothing. Alexis mentioned he didn't want to do extra work because he didn't need it, and he could not really get in trouble because he had the top grades in his class. But where does that leave us? I think it speaks to him needing to be placed into a higher level class. Unfortunately, many highschools including mine do not have the resources for AP below the grade of 12. So now we have this young man full of potential far outside of the classroom he is present in but he cannot expand and he is simply unaware of it. It reminded me of a quote from Baldwin's Sonny's Blues: “These boys, now, were living as we'd been living then, they were growing up with a rush and their heads bumped abruptly against the low ceiling of their actual possibilities.” It's the sad truth of lack of opportunities, which unfortunately is the truth for any growth who does not appeal to the dominating discourse of the world. I often feel I have been robbed of my potential but here I am writing this in hopes of changing that for students when I begin to teach.

I began with my own theorem which is that there are no bad ideas. Telling a student that their idea/method/strategy is completely wrong, especially in a math class, is something that can harm a student's learning. Hence, why we must stay positive and tell our students to stay positive as well. Everyone has the potential to the math believe it or not. That is the environment that I want my classroom to have. Everyone is free to make mistakes because that is how you learn in math and in life. It is why I like math so much. It teaches one a lot of lesson related to one's life.

When the question is asked my immediate response is honestly what type of person I am. I am practical, emotionally understanding, reasonable and caring. However, how does this translate into a classroom? While I lack artistic gifts that many students would find interesting and grab their attention especially in our media/digital driven society, what skills do I possess to make up for it. In all honesty I am unsure. I have heard from many that I would be a wonderful teacher because I seem “cool”. But it is “cool” enough. Some even argue that because I am to produce work that gets me As in all my classes, have good time management and I even have time to do others work while going to school… that in itself enough is a reason I should be a good teacher. However, when did good grades decide ability for one to teach. While we measure the ability for someone to teach based on their own success, unfortunately there is nothing further from the truth. Not all teachers are patient, but I want to be. Not all teachers are caring, but I want to be. Not all teachers are organized, but I want to be. But just in my statement alone how much did I leave out that would leave me as someone else's “Good” teacher. I Guess what I am saying is I want to be a flexible teacher, I don't need to please everyone but I want to be able to maximize my desires that align with my morality but in the interest of the children I am teaching. As for the structure and style aspect of teaching, I value the respect of the individuals in the classroom the most. However this respect is not singular to me nor the students, it is to everyone. When I speak I demand focus, because I do not speak for fun. Further, my implications of non conforming text will not be argued. While the works of white men will never lose their educational value, there is so much that has not been taught and can offer a greater understanding of the world when combined with said white text. I will also never take away from one's freedom in english, in freedom comes creativity. English honestly is the only subject in school that offers freedom, which is arguably why it's the only subject I would teach

The importance of this lies in why I am pursuing this career. We can count out the money aspect because anyone can simply see the dispositions finically of pursuing a career in education. I have no other answer than it's something I am familiar with and aligns with all the reasons I think of myself as the teacher I stated above.
