This can be applied to a modern day audience because there are so many things that we want in today's society that we often forget to look at the things we already own and appreciate those things. The world makes us think that more is better, but often to get more, you must lose more, and in this case, Kino wanted the pearl, but he ended up trading his son Coyotito's life just for the pearl, and in the end, he doesn't even keep it.

In Chapter 1, all Kino and Juana try to do is to get something worth value so they can help their son, Coyotito. When they find a pearl that is an astounding wonder, Kino takes it as it is the most valuable thing in the world. He ends up doing everything in his power to change his life for the better, when in the end, in Chapter 6, it is pointless. Kino was fighting trackers when Coyotito was shot and killed. This event made everything worthless. They didn't look at what they had already had until they lost it.
