Since 1994, the gap between democratic and republican views has continued to increase. The biggest gap between democratic and republican views has a 47% difference that lies over debate that blacks who can’t get ahead in the United States are mostly responsible for their decision. 75% of Republicans believe that while only 28% of democrats believe that. The same divide is present in the thought that poor people have it easy because they can get government benefits without doing anything in return with 65% of Republicans supporting that while only 18% of Democrats support that. The second biggest divide is over whether or not the government can afford to do much more with the needy. 69% of Republicans believe that the government can’t afford to help, while only 24% of democrats share that belief, so there is divide of 45%. On a group of 10 political values questions there is now a 10% gap between Americans aged 50 and older and younger Americans whereas the gap in 1994 was only 6%. There is also an 11% difference between those who regularly attend religious services and those who don’t, whereas it used to be a 5% difference in 1994.

There is also an 11% difference between those who regularly attend religious services and those who don’t, whereas it used to be a 5% difference in 1994. From those same 10 questions, Democrats and Republicans are more ideologically divided than in the past. Republicans are now 97% more conservative than Democrats, whereas they were only 64% more to the right in 1994. Democrats are now 95% more liberal than Republicans, where it used to be just 70% to the left in 1994. In general, back in 1994, 23% of Republicans were more liberal than the median democrat and 17% of Democrats were more conservative than the median republican and today those numbers are about 1% and 3%.
