Ted Talk Videos can be an amazing resource where we find interesting and thought-provoking talks to watch with our students. Through these talks, they practice listening and speaking, analyse, debate and discuss real life concerns and issues.

Preparing and doing survey can give students opportunities to practice to do oral interaction. By asking other people, they have to prepare what to say. Also, survey is a kind of formal activities, students get to know how to say properly in that situation.

It can give students talk to each other in that they have to share their information. Students can prepare what to say but they may struggle because it is a spontaneous task. They can learn both prepared and spontaneous talk.

For effective and well-organized debates, students should know what to speak about the topic. Therefore, by researching the contents about the topic, students can make a flowchart so that students prepare oral interaction smoothly. Also, they can grasp the flow of the debate.

I agree with the classfication in the screencast in module 4 : rule-light/rule-heavy, prepared / spontaneous. Formal debate is rule-heavy and prepared in that debates have their own rules and orders and the topic is given in advance so as to prepare what speakers should discuss. Formal debate should be used when students should learn how to deliver their messages effectively. They should learn how to suggest their own thoughts and refute with proper evidence. Students can read one controversial texts, choose one position, and do debates as a group. Also, informal chat is rule-light and spontaneous because it is daily talk and people talk to each other without any consideration about any formal situation. However, in classroom situation, this informal chat occurs in the small discussion or sharing thoughts about something. Role-plays can be done effectively if there are some texts with dialogues. Then, students can practice together.

Nonsense Debate

This is an activity that I adapted from a video I saw on youtube in which two teams are given a nonsense topic to debate in a fun and low-stakes manner. The idea is to get students to feel comfortable pitching ideas back and forth. The nonsense topic usually allows students to talk more freely as there is no weight to the argument, other than the students' own competitiveness.

With this activity, the teacher reads a short narrative to the students, and then the student try to reproduce the story. They start out by writing their ideas down, but once they get down what they want to say, we move on the getting them to tell the story to the class. To add to the difficulty of the activity, we may decide that the students will alter the narrative in someway. So for example I read the story of "The Seven Ravens" to the students and had them recreate it themselves. (A variation is to read it in modules that are out of order, and they have to listen and rearrange it) and then I gave them various choice, like to retell it set in their own country, or else to retell it in a modern setting. But it all starts with them listening, taking notes, and then creating their own version
