Haidt argues that childhoods centered around technology will detriment children’s social, mental, and physical well-being. Synchronous social interaction helps build children’s social cues and understanding of deep connections. With the integration of technology into the new generation’s childhood, children are less prone to being independent and developing critical thinking skills from risk-taking and failures. Social media perpetuates this problem by promoting short, attention-grabbing videos that raise dopamine levels, forcing children to consume more content. This increase in virtual consumption proves to disorient kids and their sense of reality as they learn from thousands of strangers, making it hard to build their own morals. On the other hand, choosing not to indulge in social media can be harmful as well, as one can be anxious and lonely being left out of “the in.” He cautions communities to change the culture around phones, not further aggravating the problem. He advises children not to have a phone before high school so that they can develop their identity and allows children to explore and gain their own independence freely.
