Life is a theatre and how you view it is different depending on your seat.

The name in itself is a poetic metaphor that portrays the theme of the story. The World on the Turtle's Back is a metaphor on perspective based upon your view. On a turtle's back, you're closer to the ground and everyone around you is bigger and stronger. You have a disadvantage. This relates to the story and the thesis because in the story, there was the right-handed and left-handed twin. The right-handed twin had an advantage over the left-handed twin. As the quote says, the right-handed twin as good. He had a straight mind, he was an upright man. He had the advantage of the world seeing him as something good. Meanwhile, the left-handed twin had been demonized since he was born. He was a devious man with a crooked mind, but he was greater than they thought. Without him, the world could never know balance, they could never know good without the bad. He wasn't crooked, he was brave enough to be hated by the audience. With the disadvantage came hate. The world hated him, they hated the bad he had created. But what is greatness and happiness without tragedy and horror? Being demonized shapes you, and it can cause you to even turn into the monster they always claimed you to be. You see the world from your seat in the theatre. One twin was graced with third-row center seats, one twin had bloodnose seats.

They called them the straight mind and the crooked mind, the upright man and the devious man, the right and the left." (The World on the Turtle's Back, 28-29).

The quote is portraying the demonization of the left-handed twin and the angelic praising of the right-handed twin. One grew up being demonized and so he became the monster they said he was. One grew up being praised and treated as an angel, but the pressure broke the camel's back and he snapped. This is important to remember because not everything is what you make it out to be. The way you perceive something may or may not break the camel's back.

If the world was all right, then it would be dull and boring. If the world was all left, then it would be dark and disheartening. This is important to note because balance keeps the world sane. Balance restores faith. Without bad, you wouldn't have anything that makes you stronger. Without good, you wouldn't have anything that makes you kinder.

To know the beauty of the world, you must experience the beauty of pain. Balance is what makes the world go round. The darkness toughens the soul and shapes the mind, but the light is what warms the soul and keeps humans good. The tremors of tragedy are what make you brave and kind, they're what make you fight for the right thing. The bright light is what guides you through the tragedy, and what reminds you that there's a better life waiting for you. You can't see the light at the end of the tunnel without the darkness.

Oral storytelling is very important in Native American culture. It's helps share morals and expresses values onto the young, and it carries on a certain pride of heritage. Especially in modern society, pride is what the Natives need to reclaim their stolen land. Storytelling shapes the soul and reminds one that if their ancestors could fight through their tragedies, then so could they.

The quote proves the power of storytelling and the legends that linger on today. The power it holds and how it expresses itself forges young minds into becoming the greatest them they could be. Much like how if a toddler watched Paw Patrol, they might want to become a police officer. Individuality stems from childhood memories and the what you believe in versus what is thrusted upon you.
