They came in huge groups off of these ships and eventually kicked out the previous rulers who was Portugal; and the Dutch took over. This rule lasted nearly 350 years before Indonesia gained Independence, but during the time that the Dutch ruled, they did what they could to become a potential world power. In 1602, they made an alliance with the East Indian spice traders as the "United East India Company", they ended up creating a monopoly on shipping and trade. This ended up becoming a bigger alliance with the Southeast Asian rulers. In 1799, everything that the Dutch had built up was slowly on the decline due to a failure in the economy. Up to 1945 it was getting worse and worse until Sukarno (future president of Indonesia) and his partner Mohammad Hatta gave a speech to give Indoesia their independence.
