Speaker: The speaker was the narrator or the boy.

 Context/Situation: This was when Mr. P and the boy were talking about the boys sister and how she used to love to write romance novels. His perspective of Indian romance novels were ones like this.

Analysis: This quote shows that in stories Indians always could only fall in love with white people.

 Significance/Analysis:  This demonstrates the stereotype that Indians always can only fall in love with white people. This has been shown in many stories such as Pocahontas. This shows how a single story is very powerful and can even affect the group of peoples perspectives.

Speaker: Boy

Context: The boy is talking to Mr. P about his sister and her old hobby of writing and reading novels. They also talk about his father’s emotionless state.

Analysis: This quote shows the boy realizing that his family has given up on their interests, hobbies and their emotions as a whole. 

Significance: He’s the only one left that really cares about how his life plays out. His family no longer cares about their own future but he still wants to do something with his.

Sherman Alexie

 Context/Situation:

He was asked about how his friends and family reacted to his books.

Analysis:  

He thinks he was labeled as looking indian but white on the inside/acting white.

 Significance/Analysis:  

This quote shows how he was labeled as an outcast from the tribe and was trying to act white and get rich, or in a term, a “sell out”. His tribe thought that success was only something for whites and seeing how Alexie was pursuing success they labeled him as white on the inside.

“We were supposed to make you give up being Indian. Your songs and stories and language and dancing. Everything. We weren't trying to kill Indian people. We were trying to kill Indian culture.” (Alexie 4)

 Context/Situation:

Mr. P was talking to the boy about how he's sorry because he was taught to teach the kids that they had to “kill the Indian”

Analysis:  

They were trying to change the Indians and how they lived. 

 Significance/Analysis:  

It means that back then, that's what the teachers were taught, you were supposed to help the children who were Indian basically not be Indian anymore because if your Indian then you have to follow certain rules. If you had to follow those rules, then you wouldn't have any freedom to do what you want to do in life.

Speaker: Sherman Alexie

 Context/Situation: This quote was said when Alexie was asked about how his friends and family responded when they found out he was leaving the reservation for a better life, saying he was doing it to get rich or be white.

Analysis:  This quote means that Alexie’s family and friends believed that he was trying to be whiter, richer or just anything other than Indian.

 Significance/Analysis:  This quote was interesting to me because it shows that people who should always love and support him were angry or disappointed that he had wanted to do something bigger with his life than stay on a reservation. This quote is significant because he didn't listen to them when they said that stuff about him being white and went on to do great things.
