I remember as a kid listening to my white classmates talk about their families’ origins; they’d made their way to Cleveland from Italy, Ireland, Hungary, Poland, Czechoslovakia, with exotic languages, lunches and customs. The only roots I knew were in Alabama and Georgia, where my parents were born. They fled the South in the first half of the 20th century, running not toward visions of freedom but away from homegrown bigotry.

what stood out to me was the comparison between many whites and black folks. it brings back up the point that we do not know where our roots are because we were taken and enslaved against our own will. this quote connects to the double consciousness theory because of the way of conforming to the ways of society relates to the switch up black people do to act alike to white people or to feel excepted in a white mans world. challenges for other races are way harder for people of color either with the lack of resources or etc.

This is because the ancestors of a lot of black people were just uprooted from Africa and that means they have been unable to be in touch with African culture. White people on the other hand are able to clearly state their family history because they weren't forced to go anywhere.
