Use examples of rhetoric, literary devices, diction, structure, tone, etc. to explain Obama's PURPOSE, and whether you believe he achieved it.

1. This message was created/delivered by Barack Obama.
2. Appeal to authority:
-This speech is coming from Barack Obama who was the president at the time which makes the speech itself more convincing and credible.

Appeal to reason:
"But we are the only advanced country on Earth that sees this kind of mass violence erupt with this kind of frequency. It doesn’t happen in other advanced countries. It’s not even close." (5:50)

Appeal to emotion:
Story about Zaevion (33:45 - 35:10)

Plain folks:
"He was exactly where any other other kid would be. Your kids. My kids." (34:16)

3. People that may have understood the speech differently than me are people who are pro-guns. They might see this speech either as a wake up call, or as an attack towards them and their beliefs.

4. Throughout the speech, what was being promoted was gun safety and violence prevention. For example Obama outlined many concrete steps that were going to be taken in order to reduce the death-toll and overall violence caused by guns.

5. The purpose of the speech was to persuade. Obama wanted to persuade people that this a very serious situation that needs to be dealt with, and it needs to be dealt with right now. In my opinion he managed to achieve his goal of bringing attention to the issue, but the steps he outlined in order to prevent the violence did not work. In 2018 so far, there have already been 17 school shootings in the U.S.

Who created this message
The 44th President of the United States, Barrack Obama, delivered the speech.

What techniques were used
Logos: Appeals to common sense: "We are the only advanced country on earth who sees this kind of mass violence erupt with this much frequency." (6 minutes).
Pathos: Obama often appealed to pathos, often referring to young people that have lost their lives to gun violence.
Approx 3 minutes in, Obama refers to parents having to bury their child, which is quite a devastating thought.
Ethos : He also invited people who were victims (or the family of victims) of gun violence in order to increase the impact of the event on the audience and so as to provide credibility to his speech.
Dramatic pauses: Obama often paused in order to add dramatic importance to his speech.

Different understandings
Victims: Would have a much more emotional outlook as they experienced such tragic events and would much appreciate the strong representation of their voice.
The general public (against guns): Those who generally hold negative opinions regarding guns would sympathize with the contents of Obama's speech and even feel angry at the inability of the government to make a change.
Lawmakers: Those involved in any sort of decision making would have a better understanding of the logistics of such a change and would, depending on their personal outlook on the Constitution, agree or disagree with the context of Obama's speech.
The general public (for guns): A gun owner will have a different perspective and hope for change which will still permit them to own their guns.
What lifestyles and worldviews are presented
Obama discusses the American lifestyle which, for some, revolves around the presence of guns. Also, he often referred to the American Constitution and its application in real life. He also discussed how these apply to real life, their limits (and how these limits should also apply to guns), and commented on the predominance of violence in this society as well as compared it to the situations in other countries.
Target audience: The target audience is primarily those present as well as the general population concerned with the subject of gun laws. Obama may also intend to reach out towards those with the power to make such a decision, pleading them to see the violent, awful side of the presence of guns in American society.
Purpose:
The purpose of this speech is to encourage change in regards to gun laws and persuade the audience to adopt a stance against the predominance of violence caused by the easy availability of guns.

Obama’s speech on gun control was extremely powerful and strong as he shared with the audience the measures he would be taking to reduce gun violence in the country. Usually presidents speak with the help of notes or a written speech , but this time it seemed like Obama was speaking freely and improvising his words. He maintained strong eye contact during the entire speech creating an connection with the audience. His purpose to sensibilize and to persuade was done by the use of rhetorical devices such as ethos and pathos. In fact, Obama uses emotions to appeal to the audience (uses examples of many americans backgrounds regarding gun violence), he gets emotional(he cries) at a certain point and lets his frustration and his pain shine through. He even makes an allusion to a family friend who got shot to make americans realize that he is no different to them and he understands their pain. All along the speech, we notice Obama is strategically pausing and this could be used to grab the audience attention. Logos is a rhetorical device he also uses to persuade as he makes uses of statistics to add credibility and make his statements relevant. ex. “Every single year, more than 30,000 Americans have their lives cut short by guns — 30,000. Suicides. Domestic violence. Gang shootouts. Accidents.” Finally, to uplift the mood of the audience and warm the atmosphere, he uses his sense of humor to create an emotional and strong bond with the victims of gun violence.

Barack Obama is an influential figure in the America. Being the president, he usually makes speeches to respond to some social problems and crisis America faces. In this case, he was talking about a very difficult topic, gun violence. He uses a serious and emotional language to address the victims and the rest of America. His main focus was to convince the americans to pressure the congress to change the reforms concerning gun violence.

Who delivered the message: The 44th president of the United States of America, Barack Obama, delivered the speech.

Techniques: The president used the pathos appeal, he talked about stories of people who had been affected by gun violence in their lives. “I was there with Gabby when she was still in the hospital, and we didn’t think, necessarily at that point, that she was gonna survive.” (3:30 min.)
He also used the ethos appeal because he invited victims of gun violence, which had a greater effect on the audience. Obama also used dramatic pauses throughout the speech to intensify the meaning of the message. He got emotional in the speech, which helped touch the audience in a more personal way.

How might different people understand this message differently: People who live in the United States, or that are victims of gun violence might have a different perspective on this matter than someone who lives in a different country and has an outsider perspective. There are different ways that one could understand this message. Some people might be against the banning of guns in the United States, some might be unaware of the consequences that it could have, and some might be of the same opinion than the president.

What lifestyle, values and points of view are represented: The lifestyle of people who have been affected by gun violence are represented in the speech. Obama also respects the people who believe that the right to guns in the Constitution is very important. He seems to acknowledge several points of view to earn the respect of the audience and incite them to listen to his perspective.

Why was this message sent? Obama’s purpose in the speech was to persuade. The message was sent to encourage Americans to realize the consequences that can come from guns. Obama wanted to highlight different ways that it might affect people; the United States are the only country that has such uncontrolled gun violence. The number of people injured or killed by guns in America is too high.
