This passage is centered around death. It is about a sculptor who we never learn the name of who creates this ice sculpture to put the remains of Mabel in. During this time he falls in love with her but it is not mutual. Many cremation companies are being started at this time so it is interesting that mabel choose him. I think in a way she knew that he would take care of her After Mabel passes away due to cancer the sculptor then turns her remains into a boat and puts her into the ocean until she melts.

"Before there is nothing left to hold, I want to tell you all the things I never got to say, what I would have said if I could have played a larger role in what remained of your life. I could have loved you". To me this quote in the passage really stood out. This quote is one of the last few sentences in the story. I feel throughout the story he kind of gate keeps his feelings towards Mabel. When he says this I think is when he feels he is finally able to get what he wants off his chest. He knows that he is almost out time to say these things to her so it either had to be now or never. But I feel that if he had a do over in this story he would have been much more up front with her and would have tried much harder to have a stronger relationship.

“Immortal Ink LLC will preserve and frame your tattoos prior to you being shipped to me. We’ll make sure all of your requests are honored.” “These tats are my stories. This is my life,”. I feel that this quote stands out because it really shows how much are world is evolving and changing so quickly. A hundred years ago we would have never thought society would have come to this. I also like how this quote points out how tattoos can have special meaning. Some people will criticize saying tattoos don't have meanings and are worthless but this proves that they can have deeper meaning Tattoos can really show who a person is and what means the most to them.

Tattoos can have a variety of different meanings based on the culture. 32% of americans have tattoos. 69% of those are to honor or remember something and 47% is to make a statement about their beliefs. In early egypt they have found that several women's bodies had tattoos. Usually on the stomach and chest. They also had special patterns leading researcher to believe the tattoos served as an amulet to protect the women's especially pregnancy. In Greek and roman cultures, tattoos were used as a belonging to something. Usually these "belonging" tattoos were about religion, if you were a criminal, or if you belonged to someone (slave).

Reading this story I feel that I also see some similarities in the movie Divergent. With tattoos having several different meanings in the movie Divergent tattoos are really significant. A tattoo can mean who you are. For example, in the movie the society is divided in factions so most commonly people will get their faction tattooed in them to show who they are.

When I read Songs of Your Decay, one of the first connection I thought of was the movie The Notebook. This is mostly because of the narrator "love triangle" and with her husband and Laird as well as the theme of forbidden love. The duality of Allie having to choose between what's safe and what's passion is similar to how our narrator is caught between the safe choice of her husband but the immense connection she has with Laird. Similar to The Notebook there are elements of cheating but because the movie and the book have the adulterers as the main characters you find yourself having more empathy for them than if they weren't. Not that it is not seen as wrong but, you gain an understanding that they have very complex feelings about who they love as well as their complex feelings of keeping true to themselves.

One of the events that seemed so interesting to me is at the end when Aubrey was supposed to meet her husband at Extreme Wings to talk about their marriage issues after he found out that she lied to him. It was what solidified to me that their issues went so much deeper than Laird and maybe he was just a mere escape for Aubrey. Though they are both flawed in the marriage, objectively Aubrey did some pretty bad offenses when her husband seemed to be working hard at trying to make their relationship work. Though I still had empathy for her especially with her going through the grief and loss of losing Laird, I still started to begin to see her in a different light she couldn't even meet him for a conversation. She sits there in the parking lot watching him hurt, alone. Yes she's grieving Laird, but he's grieving their marriage without the closure or complete explanation of what went wrong. It's just an open wound with no bandage to heal.

The themes in this story especially about how pandemic life can have an effect on marriages. If there wasn't the mention of it being 2031 you would think this is a real account from just 2 years ago.
