In the Glass Castle Jeannette and her siblings start accepting the fact that their parents aren't going to change and all they can do is deal with anything that comes along. Jeannette accepts that her dad isn't the man she always thought he was. This is shown is page 268 when she says, ''What I wanted to say was that I knew Eric would never steal my paycheck, throw me out the window...I'd always been terrified I'd fall for a hard drinking, hell-raising charismatic scoundrel like you.'' She realized the type of guy her dad was but she accepted him with all of the flaws he had and all the wrong he had done, she knew who he was and still loved him.

Fantasy vs Reality

In the Glass Castle there is a lot of fantasy vs reality. The glass castle is a great example for this concept because Rex promised so much and did so little to make it a reality for his family. He told them stories and said that they would do so many things but he just needed to find gold(which he never did). He told them that they were a special family and the kids were special but in reality they just had a twisted world and if the kids were special it was because they were smart and they knew their ways around things.

The glass castle tells us about the times when the kids started growing and when they realized that life wasn't exactly how their parents said and they also started understanding things more clearly. The picture represents the moment when Lori, Jeannette, and Brian moved to New York and actually started to build their future lives. An example is on page 262, it states, ''All of us kids had our own lives by then.'' Jeannette and her siblings were already going on about their lives separately after all their childhood problems and everything else they all manage to have a life and all of them were successful, except for Maureen.

Even if the Walls family was not your regular everyday family they still did had something in common with other families. They loved each other, the kids loved their parents even with all their flaws, they all accepted them and nonmatter how dysfunctional Rex and Rose Mary were, they loved their kids. Rose Mary didn't really show it much but she did love them, Rex would always show his kids he loved them and the love they were given by their parents was what made them strong and helped get them along. Rex did care about his family and made sure that Jeannette knew she was special and she was going to be something big, he supported her goals and helped her with hw, for example on page 234 it says, '' He insisted on helping me with the article to ensure its technical accuracy.'' Her dad was proud of her for talking to his idol that he was even sober so he could talk to her about how her interview was and before the interview he gave her some pointers. rex was always supportive, even when she moved to New York, at least towards the end he was and he walked her to the train station.

Forgiveness

Forgiveness in this book is very big because of so many times that it happens. This once a main theme for the Glass Castle because throughout the whole book Jeannette forgives her dad for everything he does. She doesn't keep any type of hate towards her parents even if she does get mad at times when her parent really cross the line, the double/triple line. A quote from the book on page 115 states, ''When dad went crazy, we all had our own ways of shutting down and closing off.'' This quote shows that they all learned one way or another how to react to situations like the ones their dad would cause, they did forgive him at a point and didn't tell him off, they just kept their thoughts to themselves.

Broken Promises

In the Glass Castle is shows that not everything one says will be made true. Rex always promised them something that he never did. None of the promises he made would come true for his family, he always manage to let them down. On page 123 is says, '' After all he'd put himself through, I couldn't believe Dad had gone back to the booze. It shows the disappointment that Jeannette was going through after her dad broke his promise that he would stop drinking. Rex broke bigger promises besides this one, for example the biggest one, ''building'' the Glass Castle which he never did. Instead of even trying he ruined it by destroying the foundation that Brian and Jeannette had made.
