In her community there was no elementary school for kids to attend since the last one closed down in 2000 due a diesel fuel leak which caused the contamination of the school. Canada's federal government promised to build a new school for the community, but later cancelled these plans. This forced students of the Attawapiskat community to attend school in poor conditioned portables. The portables had poor heating and some were even contaminated with mold. On this day Shannen spoke for her community on the Parliament Hill and confronted the Indian Affairs Minister. The first thing she said to the crowd on that day was “Today I am sad because Mr. Chuck Strahl said he didn’t have the money to build our school.....but I didn’t believe him.” Shannen was driven even after being denied of her request of a new school, she did not give up. Shannen made many inspiring speeches at many different locations like at the education of rights conference. Despite the many time she was put down or rejected Shannen did not give up. After hard work she had become known to the public and her community. She was nominated as an ambassador for every children in Attawapiskat and she was given the International Noble Peace Prize by the noble laureate. In memory of Shannen the Attawapiskat community renamed their Indigenous education campaign to Shannen’s Dream. In 2014 a new elementary was built and opened up in Attawapiskat, unfortunately Shannen was not able to live to see her dream come true. Soon after the school was opened a flood occurred due to a malfunctions in the sprinkler system. It was stated that the issue had originated for the initial building of the school. the flood caused the school to close down temporarily for about six weeks.
