• Diaphysis: is a hard hollow cylinder of hard compact bone. It was what makes the long bone hard and strong and yet light enough for movement
•medullary Canal: center of the shaft, this is filled with yellow bone marrow, mostly made of fat cells. Also the marrow contains many blood vessels and some cells that form white blood cells
•spongy bone: location at the ends of long bones and form the center of all other bones. Creating the sponge like appearance of cancellous bone
•articular cartilage: acts as a shock absorber between two bones that meet to form a joint.
•red bone marrow: Red blood cells, platelets and most white blood cells arise in red marrow
•periosteum: tough fibrous tissue that contains blood vessels, lymph vessels, and nerves. Necessary for bone growth, repair, and nutrition
•nutrient epiphysis: usually accompanied by one or two veins, enters the bone through the nutrient foramen, runs obliquely through the cortex, sends branches upward and downward to the bone marrow
•distal epiphysis: made up of spongy bone, which is bone with tiny holes similar to lattices. These holes are filled with connective tissue and bone marrow. The distal epiphysis is also is covered in articular cartilage, enabling bones to move at the joints without grinding on each other.
•metaphysis: narrow portion of a long bone between the epiphysis and the diaphysis. It contains the growth plate, the part of the bone that grows during childhood, and as it grows it ossifies near the diaphysis and the epiphyses.
