Julie Mehretu was very influenced by Jackson Pollock, both by his scale and technique. Like a lot of American painter's Pollock and Mehretu both painted on very large canvases, and it was Pollock that influenced Mehretu to do so. While Mehretu does not do the drip style that Pollock does, she was very captivated by his use of color and energetic lines.

Along with city plans, government and public buildings influence her and her art. She especially picks buildings that are special or unique to a city, like the Berlin Courts or the waterfront buildings in Venice. She also overlaid buildings on top of each other.
