Italy has a lot of hills and mountains but were much more easier to travel over than the mountains on Greece.
Due to this Rome and the rest of Italy turned inland for trade and communicated more often by giving them the united government opposed to Greece's city-states.
Most of the land around Rome was  fertile allowing romans farming.

Rome lies to the west of the Apennine Mountains that forms the backbone of Peninsular Italy.
