Vanuatu is 4th happiest country, really happy and cheap, small ecological footprint. Strong social connections due to social meetings. Vanuatu isn’t the most equal country, with 22% inequality.

Mexico (HPI 40.7) is the second most happiest country according to the HPI. Mexican people has quite long life expectancy and their wellbeing is also good. Also their ecological footprint is low compared to other countries.

Norway is the 12th happiest country. That's because the country is very rich and has long life expectancy. The country's enormous wealth comes from large oil and fish industries. The wellbeing in Norway is very good. The inequality is also one of the lowest in the whole world. The only bad thing in the index about Norway is the large ecological footprint.

The US has a problem with economic inequality. Poverty has increased as a result of the recession in 2008; in 2010, 1 in 6 live under the poverty line. On top of that, its inequality of outcomes score is one of the highest among Western industrialised countries, meaning that wellbeing and life expectancy are only high for some.

How is the Happy Planet Index calculated?

The Happy Planet Index combines four elements to show how efficiently residents of different countries are using environmental resources to lead long, happy lives.
Elements are;
Wellbeing: How satisfied the residents of each country say they feel with life overall, on a scale from zero to ten, based on data collected as part of the Gallup World Poll.
Life expectancy: The average number of years a person is expected to live in each country based on data collected by the United Nations.
Inequality of outcomes: The inequalities between people within a country, in terms of how long they live, and how happy they feel, based on the distribution in each country’s life expectancy and wellbeing data. Inequality of outcomes is expressed as a percentage.
Ecological Footprint: The average impact that each resident of a country places on the environment, based on data prepared by the Global Footprint Network. Ecological Footprint is expressed using a standardized unit: global hectares per person.
