Lupita Nyong'o, Young M.A, Ayana Bird, Lacy Redway, Vernon François and more talk about braids and black hair culture in America.

One of the main inspirations for the film was Braided I loved how this film used very eye-catching and bold text in the introduction which inspired my opening sequence. They also used a wide range of archive footage showcasing black hair which I took inspiration from. Text also pops up the screen throughout which I tied to incorporate. This film is highly engaging and showcases hair in a very thoughtful and energetic way. I also tried to keep my film upbeat and keep it quite fast paste.

I did this by colour-grading the shot and changing the tint and exposure as well as adding a slight burn effect. This meant that I could fully focus on one part of the film per day. To film on day one I used my Sony A7siii and decided to shoot it hand help whilst also using a stabiliser. I made the creative decision to film handheld so that it could give the viewer a sense of being in the salon chair and get a more personal perspective of feeling like the client. This also allowed me to capture more fluid movement of the hair and get close up. I used two angles a close-up and a wide using two cameras (Sony A7sii and Sony A7siii) and two tripods to capture this. Two angles were very important to get a more dynamic range of shots and also easily cut out any mistakes. A close-up meant that we could see their emotion which was really important and wide allowed us to see their full body language and the salon space. As well as this I also used ring lights to make it look more cinematic.
