Engagement activity of the week: every one should individually write the answer to this question on the Padlet.
         6. To what extent is labelling theory able to explain the origins of deviance? It could be explained as being imposed from the powerful groups in society on those with little power. However, where do their definitions of deviance come from? For example:

a. In the UK it is legal to drink alcohol and smoke tobacco (both drugs), but not to smoke marijuana or take cocaine. Can labelling theory explain this?
b. In the town of Ferguson (state of Missouri, USA), the location of race-related riots in 2014, citizens are allowed to own guns and carry them in public but are fined $200 for having ‘saggy pants’ (where the top of a person’s trousers/jeans sits significantly below the waist, revealing their underwear). Can labelling theory explain this?

A) label theory should not explain this... In fact, I have no choices, dont know 😞
B) Label theory can explain this. Because people need guns to keep themselves and their families safe during special times, but having a gun (which exposes pants?) A $200 fine? Hence the name for this phenomenon: "saggy pants." Because of the special circumstances, it will be labeled.
The above is just my guess or nonsense😂

a. Can't explain. The label theory is usually about one type of person, and we can't be sure who will choose to smoke marijuana or take cocaine. It's not about labeling, it's about personal choice. And status is useless in the face of the law, as long as make this behavior, is illegal.

b. Can explain. This kind of people is fined because they are perceived to be more likely than others to use guns to intentionally injure people. This kind of difference is that people label people based on their appearance.

People define deviant behavior according to the current environment or region. A: Smoking cannabis is not legally allowed in the UK, so people who do it are considered deviant. B: Owning a gun is illegal in other countries of the world, but in America at that time, it was considered normal. Based on these two examples, I think that the label theory can not explain, Because they don't have more and more deviant behavior because they're labeled, but are decided by the local environment and policies.

1. I believe that can be explained by labelling theory. Because law is decided by the government which is the powerful groups, and the government according to some research and phenomenon find that cocaine is bad for people even wil damage people's lives, because they have higher addiction, so they label the cocaine and so on is more harmful for people, and decide it is illegal. However, in some countries, cocaine is decided by legal, they may think that cocaine can let people have better mood(?).(not very sure)
2. Yes. saggy pants has not wrong. Some people just believe that saggy pants is rascality, so they carry on the fine disposition to its.

a. Cannot explain. As it is an individual choice, it's doesn't mean that they are label by others as they can choose what they drink the alcohol and smoke. It is an legal behaviours and not a deviant behaviours.

b. Yes. It's more likely to the individual like focusing on the micro. They need to pay 200 dollars due to their deviance behaviours, such as hurting others. They break the laws so they need to have punishment.

1, I think labeling theory explains this, as deviance is concerned with the tendency of the majority to negatively label minorities or people who are seen as deviating from standard cultural norms. Drug use is a minority population and deviates from the standard culture of society as well. If given the right guidance in the early stages of deviance, the behaviour may stop, but once labelled, the surrounding people will react accordingly to the label, such as discrimination, contempt, and by being subjected to these negative looks for a long time, he will identify himself as a deviant and continue the deviant behaviour.
2. The labeling theory could explain this, on the one hand, by the fact that such dressing is not in line with society's standard culture, and on the other hand, by the fact that it is a minority group. I don't think allowing the carrying of firearms has anything to do with how one wears trousers, it is a subjective judgement, therefore it is the label theory.

1. This may be due to the fact that the quality of transgressive behaviour does not lie in the behaviour itself, but is the result of the reactions of various social audiences to such behaviour. People in the UK are even less accepting of behaviour such as smoking cannabis or taking cocaine.
2. This may be culturally relevant. Wearing "sagging trousers" in the local area may be a breach of etiquette.
I don't really know how to explain this, sorry.

A. No, it can't. Because it is about law and it is strictly forbidden if it's not allowed.
B. It might be allowed by policy to carry guns for safety issues. But showing it in public would cause society panic as it shouldn't be a item to show deviant and labelling people. So I think it can be explained, as 'saggy pants' is the word to describe the label and it is deviant that citizens would get fined.
