Frank Zappa once said "The mind is like a parachute, it doesn't work if it's not open."
I feel that the conception of my mind as a life saver (if properly used) is the key to my international life. Nothing has to be strange, different or awkward to me, but simply new. With this attitude, I try to release a lot of stress, and I feel always ready to new challenges.

It means to be reactive and ready to make questions and find answers in front of the unknown. In this way, no culture, no tradition, no environment could put you in "a bad spot", but all these things can only give you opportunities to know more.

How do schools today prepare students for global citizenship within biology and other group 4 subjects?

Biology, and Science in general, have to give to the students the opportunity to understand the real meaning of the research, underlining the ethical aspects properly. A scientific discovery in a global world could be a big source of money, in the era of the global market, but only a proper evaluation of all the pro and cons can give the most predictable answer about the consequences. Once again an inquiring mind is the solution to the question.

What are the ways in which the texts, topics, or ideas in your classroom have benefited from contributions from other communities, cultures, and nationalities?

I always keep my eyes open to recognize where specific cultures or communities can explain the meaning of a word, a concept or a topic. Being European, I use to pull out my culture when it is the case. Most of the terminology in science is Latin, and only looking for etymology gives a wider view to the content we are working on.

How can you help your students understand the importance of international understanding as it relates to your course?

I consider important to teach the students that science is not all inside books, inside a lab, or just relate to an observation. Science lives in the culture of every population: when we talk about medicine, for example, every country has his own traditional set of cures, not always scientifically explained or tested, sometimes rejected. It is important that we learn how to look at them with inquiring mind, because you can always find something explicable by the scientific laws we already know, or maybe we can figure out some new way to prove something.

In a 9 grade Science class, I made a lesson on the "Water Cycle". At the end of the lesson, I asked the students what they thought about the influence of humans in relation to the water, and they started debating, all centered on Asian (or better Korean) issues. I made them shift their view on an African aspect, and then on a North American aspects, and the debate began being way more interesting.
