Some students who have a tough time engaging are those with other distractions like anxiety, attentional issues or greater issues going on outside of school. They have a tough time listening and relating. Instead of school being a "good fit", they end up feeling like a "misfit"

The lesson for which I have a soft spot is the "Web of Words" activity. It is a group activity that demonstrates how connected words can make us and how important it is to be aware of what we say when we interact with other people. What I say to a student can impact his/her mood and, consequently, how he/she then interacts with others. Kindness costs nothing. Harsh words hurt everyone.

I LOVE teaching the Labor Law lesson from Business Law. It is a simulation of a labor union formation in a local hospital. Students take on the personas of hospital workers, administrators, union organizers and union busters. It is fun and the kids really enjoy the process. They learn the basics of labor union formation and the perspectives of both sides.

I'm not sure I can name a lesson (about math) that teenagers would be willing to pay to see. Tying in the next chapter on enthusiasm, I can confidently say I bring energy to the classroom every day, and despite the lessons, I try to bring excitement and humor to each lessons. In the near future, I am planning to do a breakout box with a review of multiple skills - I do think students will love that and it takes the fun to the next level.

My lesson on satire is fun because it incorporates sarcastic humor in many different mediums. I look up satirical cartoons that fit the overall humor of each classroom. The students read articles on TheOnion, which again, I choose with specific classes in mind, and they work with partners to discuss both the humor and the serious aspect of each. Then we watch pieces of an episode of John Oliver's show. They are always really interested in the subject that I chose, which does not change from class to class, and they have interesting serious debates about the subject afterwards in addition to laughing during the show.

From that we talk about how the game made them feel and what actions they took. Then students read about the real red scare and compare to the game. The lesson ends with an inquiry where they ask questions and research something else they didn't learn about the red scare.
