Hence, promoting diversity in these classrooms and being aware of it is essential if teachers want to give every student the best learning experience possible. However, this diversity in the classroom is expressed in many different ways depending on the student’s levels of proficiency, socio-cultural backgrounds, etc.

    In these cases it is important to remember that all students will get something out of the class, but not necessarily the same things, and not necessarily what teachers aim to teach them. For instance, students with high levels of proficiency may be successfully decoding and retrieving new information of a lesson whilst low proficiency level students may be just getting acquainted with the new information. It is also important to bear in mind that one single methodology is not applicable for all the target audiences a teacher may encounter. For that reason, teachers have to be dynamic and vary their classes according students levels, approaching different learning styles and strategies.

    Even though this is not an easy thing to do,  we believe that our challenge as future teachers is get to know our students’ interests and needs in order to adapt the material. Every student, regarding their proficiency level, has to reach the final outcomes of the lesson. Teachers can make that possible trough: use of different strategies, consider their learning styles, guide students through their learning process (scaffolding), and keep them motivated.

    It is also worth mentioning that by giving optional activities for students or reducing the difficulty it does not mean that the tasks will not be challenging for students. On the contrary, they should be challenging so they do not feel neglected and can make progress in their learning.
