What is the Story of America?

I believe that the story of america is complicated. When people think of America , many remember the descriptive term , "A Melting Pot" . The exact term "melting pot" came into general usage in the United States after it was used as a metaphor describing a fusion of nationalities, cultures and ethnicity in the 1908 play of the same name. The reason America is complicated is because many Americans say that everyone is welcomed until people actually come , and then they flip their statement and tell them to go back where they came from or that they are a threat due to past events in history. Isn't that confusing , U.S officials say we welcome people but as soon as they come to what they think is a better life we turn against them, on top of that we expect them to blend in more and water down their own culture. We expect them to conform. Another way to think of Americas story is that it is a story of progress but the only progress seen over the past 200 years are improvements in technology, industrialization , and the military . These are all things that help further the government and give people with money more power , but what we don't see a lot of progress on is racial discrimination and gender inequality, things that would better the lives of the whole community and strengthen us as a whole.

Industrialization - Gender inequality in Jobs

During industrialization ,women found jobs in domestic services, textile factories, coal mines, and seamstresses. Women went from farmers and caregivers of children to factory workers and working just as the men were. Yet, women were forced to work hard jobs for less pay than men. Meaning that just because the employee was a women she was paid less even if she was working harder than the male employee next to her. Today this same treatment is seen in the modern day job industry , where women are given less opportunities than men and are looked upon as incapable of achieving the same things as a man . Society doesn't just believe that women are not as capable, but they think women should not do what society calls " a man's job" . This is another example of America not focusing on progression in the right movements because this struggle to give women the same respect as men has gone on for over 200 years and yet gender inequality is seen everywhere, not just the work industry.

Through nonviolent protests, the civil rights movement of the 1950/60's broke the pattern of public facilities' being segregated by “race” in the South and achieved the most important breakthrough in equal-rights legislation for African Americans. But even after many years, the fight for Black rights still remains and it is shown in the BLM protests today. We are not seeking progression for people as a whole , instead were are seeking progression towards the people in power and with wealth. true progression is all inclusive, and not to one singular group that is handpicked by the government. Its hard to measure the progress when we have reverted back to old ways so often. This major public movement in history shows how even after years and years , people of color are still fighting for their rights and justice for the crimes committed against them.

The main themes in A Raisin in the Sun are dreams, selfishness, and race. Dreams: Everyone in the play has a dream. However, achieving one's dreams proves a complicated task , especially when factors like race, class, and gender interfere. In the book , A Raisin In The Sun, towards the end of the book the younger family buys a house that is located in a middle class white neighborhood. When the family goes to move in , Linder makes them seem welcomed, but than proceeds to contradict his statement and tries to get them to move to a different neighborhood, specifically one for colored families . He even tried to give them their money back, but that did not stop them from getting what they worked for. This is an example of the flaws in America's nickname "The Melting Pot" because in this Linder acts welcoming but at the same time tries to drive them away.

The Vietnam war was an event in history where the U.S gov't and military abused its power to use dangerous weapons and increased military force in order to accomplish victory. This is an example of the american dreams effect on society because the american military just wanted to accomplish victory during the war , that they used what ever means necessary to reach it , including risking and taking the lives of multiple civilians. Also during the Vietnam war, U.S citizens were expected to conform and go to war because the government said they had to . But once people saw what the war was like and what American soldiers were doing and going through , they started protesting the Vietnam war . This caused for the gov't to lose some of its power and a increasing negative public opinion of the U.S government.

How is the American Dream apart of this story?

Over time, the phrase "The American dream" has come to be associated with upward mobility and enough economic success to lead a comfortable life. Historically, however, the phrase represented the idealism of the great American experiment. The american dream is a part of America's story because it is what most people thrived for and worked for and it is what shaped so many people's lives and goals, yet it was simply unreachable. Many people were blinded with reaching this goal in their life , that they didn't realize how much they lost until they lost it all . Whether it was their family, happiness, or even themselves. This idea of working in order to be the best is what drove America towards building the next best weapon for war, creating the next big thing in technology, and being the best country. This need to be the best is why so many problems still remain in this world and have not been fixed merely because the people who have the power to do something , focus on bettering themselves and the higher power and not the community.
