Summary

Mathilde Loisel, a beautiful but discontented woman, dreams of wealth and luxury but is married to a modest clerk. When her husband secures an invitation to a high-society ball, she borrows a stunning diamond necklace from her wealthy friend, Madame Forestier, to appear elegant.

At the ball, Mathilde is the center of attention, but afterward, she discovers the necklace is lost. Unable to find it, she and her husband replace it with an identical one, costing 36,000 francs, plunging them into debt. For ten years, they live in poverty, working tirelessly to repay loans.

Years later, Mathilde meets Madame Forestier and confesses the truth—only to learn the original necklace was a fake, worth barely 500 francs. The story ends with bitter irony, as Mathilde realizes her sacrifices were for nothing.
