It heavily involves critical race theory because the colonial mentality relies on a perception of inequality of value between the colonizer and colonized, often derived from their race. Colonialism is often justified by a claimed lack of civilization in a particular race or ethnicity leading to the necessity for them to be ruled over, which is why colonialism has almost exclusively been inflicted on non-European populations.

Postcolonial influences are at the core of many stereotypes or prejudices present in our modern society. By understanding the origin of these biases with a postcolonial lens, we can understand why certain stereotypes are the way they are in a way that was before very difficult to reach at with just critical race theory or other theories.

Jane Eyre takes place in the subdued wealth and social intrigue of Victorian England at the height of its colonial empire/exploitation. This means that there will be countless subtle factors at play that a ripe for exploration as we examine how England's exploitation of others feeds into and enables the story. It also provides the perfect opportunity to examine up close how wealth, privilege, and social status are tied into the colonial network as well as its history.

Postcolonial theory draws heavily from critical race theory and marxist theory as we can use it to explore power dynamics usually defined by wealth or social status within a society. With this, we can use critical race theory to identify patterns in those that are the perceived oppressors and oppressed.

There are really two different ways to interpret jane eyre through a postcolonialist theory lenses. As a woman and governess, Jane can be thought of as a member of the colonized group. However, Jane is also a British woman, which in some ways can make her a member of the colonizers instead.

It uses former and current relations to explain how otherness occurs and how it can lead to the loss of identity for an individual, culture, or race.

Postcolonial theory emphasizes the amount of inequality and stereotypes in our society, as do many other theories we have studied.

Although postcolonial theory analyzes colonization and imperialism of the past, the effects of these activities are still seen today. Social, racial, economic, and political discrimination in today's world can be tied back to colonialism. It is important to know how long this oppression/discrimination has existed, as well.

Because culture involves race, gender, class, and several other aspects, various aspects of this theory can be applied to other forms of oppression, such as racial or gender-based oppression.
