An important ethical issue in Jesse Cale’s research on sexual a0ssault in Australian universities is personal sensitivity and institutional reputational risk. Universities refused to share official assault data because they feared it would make them appear unsafe. This raises tensions between academic transparency and institutional reputation. A key ethical consideration is also confidentiality, since survivors’ experiences must never be identifiable, therefore they will be protected from public attention or further revenge from assaulters. Following Banks (2019, p98), researchers must balance integrity, accountability and care in researching the vulnerable participant group.

To address these dilemmas, Cale could develop collaborative data-sharing agreements that protect anonymity, use aggregated or de-identified datasets(According to susan banks p97 ,deidenfication may involve removal of names, places,or other information that links data to participants), and create an independent ethics advisory group including survivor advocates. He could also apply trauma-informed consent progucedures to ensure participant wellbeing. These actions align with the SAGE Research Planner’s guidance that were addressing confidentiality as an important aspect of research.

An ethical consideration in this case is the limitation of secondary data variables. Some jurisdictions only provided broad “yes/no” indicators of training, which risks oversimplifying outcomes. Ethically, researchers must acknowledge these limitations to avoid misleading policy decisions.

The most important ethical considerations concern human rights, inherent human worth and self-determination. Therefore, this research would need a high risk ethics in practical application. To contribute with some new inputs the other groups have not talked deeply about, we would like to reflect a bit about the balance of power and participant autonomy. How could the researcher actively counteract the power imbalance between researcher and participant? One way the researcher can reduce the power imbalance is by creating an open and respectful dialogue in which participants are clearly informed of their rights, including the right to withdraw at any time without negative consequences. By involving participants in the research process and reflecting on their own power position, the researcher strengthens participants' control and autonomy.

It is also important to create safe environments where participants feel comfortable sharing their experiences without force or pressure. The researcher should also adapt the methodology to be culturally sensitive and respectful. For example, cultural differences can affect how informed consent is perceived and given, especially if participants come from different cultural backgrounds where the concept of consent or privacy may be interpreted differently.

Another important point is the aftercare and responsibility of the research. That the researcher should not only offer support during interviews, but also have plans for the effects of the research on the well-being of the participants. This can include follow-up contacts or referrals to long-term support resources, especially if traumatic memories have been raised.

Additional measures are confidentiality in data storage and handling. To be extra careful about how data is handled technically to ensure sectarianism, such as encryption of audio recordings and text files or the use of secure servers, and how long data is retained according to ethical guidelines. This reduces the risk of data breaches and builds trust. (Tilde Hansson and Cornelia Selander)
