A conflict that arose between Amir and Hassan is when during a kite fighting competition, Hassan runs a kite for Amir and ends up getting chased into an alleyway by the boys that bully him and Amir. Amir does not help Hassan. He hides, watching in the corner. And then runs because he was "coward". However, he feels guilty as a result. The author uses this scene to highlight Amir's fear and helplessness. This impacts Amir's feelings of guilt towards Hassan throughout his adult life.
