The folk religion of Shang was polytheistic, meaning that they believed in more than one god. Ancestor worship was also very important to the Shang. They thought that the success of growing crops, and healthy well being, was because of the ancestors being happy, or pleased.

Citizens of the Shang Dynasty were classified into four social classes: the king and aristocracy, the military, artisans and craftsmen, and peasants. Members of the aristocracy were the most respected social class, and were responsible for governing smaller areas of the dynasty. The middle class of Shang usually held artisans and craftsmen, who mainly worked with bronze. Farmers were mostly in the lowest class. Many people call the lowest class people peasants, and some scholars believe they functioned as slaves.

Fu Hao was China's first female general and was known to be alive around 1040 BCE. King Wu Ding, a leader of one of the monarchs in the Shang Dynasty, was seeking the allegiance of neighboring tribes, which led to the result of him having 60 wives, and Fu Hao was one of them. Because all the records of Fu Hao were made by oracle bones, and most of them were lost, we only know that Fu Hao was leading an army of 13,000 soldiers.
