I have each student write their name on an index card followed by some facts about them (favorite food, color, movie, band, etc.). When we have a couple of minutes at the end of class, I like to read off these interesting facts and have the other students guess whose card I am reading from. The kids love it and eventually have most of the facts memorized by the end of the year.

How many triangles are in this drawing?

I create a drawing on the Marker Board that has many triangles hidden within a large triangle. Individually the students try to find the answer. All answers are recorded on the board. Then the students work with a partner, and results are posted. For a third attempt the students are placed into groups of three, and again the results are posted.

While working in these groups the kids will draw, trace, redraw, break the whole into smaller segments, and ask questions of each other; "How did you get that?" Some groups do come up with the correct answer.

There are many ways to solve the problem. But when I show them how to label all the intersections like it is done in math class, then the light goes on. They must use what they already know and apply it to the task at hand.

The conclusion is that they will have to ask for help from their peers because I can not get to everyone at once.
