• A house of 3, Matilda, Mother, Grandfather

• Cook coffeehouse

• Grandfather built the home in 1783, Matilda was 4 years old

• The father died two months after the coffee shop opened

• Eliza was the coffeehouse cook

• Eliza was born a slave, her husband bought her freedom.

• Sickness by the river

• Polly was sewed by the candle stick, (She died)

• Fumes around the district, possibly what killed Polly

• There has been stories and rumors of fevers going around

• A doctor says that diseases are coming again, this one is called Yellow Fever

• The town hasn't seen Yellow Fever for 30 years

  Chapter 5

  - August 24th, 1793

• One week later, 64 people died, stories of a fever going around near the docks

• Lucille is the Mothers name

• The mother doesn't let Matilda leave the house anymore, but the Grandfather doesn't see what's wrong.

• Her mother gives in and she is going to get groceries for the shop.

• At the tea party the daughters are messing with Matilda

• Colette got the fever and clasped mid arguement.

• Shops are closing because of the ill.

• The fever even spread to Bucks County and Delaware.

• They passed a limping man dressed in dark rags, that was pushing a cart.

• There was a woman is the cart.

• It was Matilda's mother.

  Chapter 9

• Her mother fainted by the heat.

• She was alone when her mother started vomiting blood.

• Her mom told her to leave and there is no one to take care of her.

• When she woke up Eliza was there.

• Mr. Rowley said she has autumnal fever.

• Dr. Kerr is scanning her today.

• Mr. Rowley is an imposter

• Her mother has Yellow Fever.

• Matilda is being sent away

  Chapter 11,

  -September 7, 1793

• They stopped, the 4 people who stopped them were robbers and they were armed with guns.

• The people weren't robbers they were there to keep the sick out of town.

• There was a doctor with them, Grandfather has a disease.

• The farmer kicked them off the cart and threw them to the road with nothing, they are stranded.

• Matilda has to manage on her own with her Grandfather who is ill.

  Chapter 13

  -September 10th, 1793

• While trying to carry fruit for her Grandfather, Matilda fainted.

• People found her and she doesn't know where she is.

• She might be in the place where people keep the people with yellow fever, her Grandfather is also there.

• Mrs. Flagg is there any she is caring for Matilda, Mrs. Flagg confirmed the her Grandfather does not have Yellow Fever, his heart was acting up because of the heat.

• They are in Bush Hill

• They have been gone for 5 days already.

  Chapter 15

  -September 22nd, 1793

• Dr. Deveze said she will live.

matilda is sick but will live.

they were taken to bush hill.

someone is taking care of them.

they have not heard anything from mother or eliza.

• Some clerk wanted to send her to an orphanage.

  Chapter 16

  -September 24th, 1793

• Matilda is riding home in a wagon of 5, Mrs. Bowles, 2 boys, Susannah, her, her grandfather, and the driver.

• Matilda and her Grandfather might have to stay at the Luddington's farm because there is barely any food at their home town.

• They are passing a dying town

• Her Grandfather told her not to look at something, she did, there was bed linen and then an arm and leg, there was a man.

• The man had the fever and was tossed out by his family so the fever doesn't spread.

• They fled the 8th and it is now the 24th, it has been 16 days.

• It came to Mrs. Bowles and the childrens stop, they are separating.

• Mrs. Bowles said to Matilda, "Take care. Whatever you do, take care."

  Chapter 17

  -September 24, 1793

• They are home (back at the coffeehouse)

• The coffee house was a mess, everything was out of place.

• Someone broke in.

• Mother and Eliza aren't home.

  Chapter 18

  -September 25th, 1793

• Matilda is going to take a bath

• They barely have any food but they are managing, because of the garden.

• Whenever Grandfather steps into the sun he can barely breathe and his face turns red.

  Chapter 19

  -September 26th 1793

• There are 2 people by the window.

• They are in the coffeehouse and haven't spotted Matilda yet.

• They are trying to rob the house.

• They are taking Grandfathers sword.

• They found her, and caught her.

• The tall robber slapped her 3 times.

• Grandfather woke up and saw, he had his rifle pointed at the tall man.

• Grandfather shot, the tall man leaped out of the way and punched him in the face.

• Matilda hit him with Grandfathers sword as he choked Grandfather.

• Grandfather is dead.

-September 27th, 1793

• A man brought a cart outside the house with 2 dead people in it, a child and a woman. The man was telling Matilda to bring out her dead.

• The men who were going to bury Grandfather were stopped by Matilda who made them pray for him.

• Mr. Brown is still in town, the printer.

• There is a strange old lady who noticed Matilda.

• She was shoeing Matilda away.

• The woman slapped her with her cane as Matilda was trying to explain how she had recovered from the fever.

• Matilda is running.

  Chapter 21

  -September 27th, 1793

• The little girl's name was Nell, her mother was dead.

• Matilda is trying to find a place for Nell to be safe, while searching she thinks she sees Eliza.

• Matilda keeps searching for Eliza with Nell.

• They were reunited!

  Chapter 22

  -September 27th, 1793

• Mother was supposed to be shipped to the farm with Matilda and Grandfather but she never came.

• Matilda explained everything to Eliza

• Mother is not dead, she recovered from the fever!

• Eliza lives with her brother Joseph.

• Joseph's wife died, they have 2 kids William and Robert.

• Rumors say Africans can't get yellow fever.

• When the frost comes, the fever must eventually die out.

  Chapter 23

  -September 28th 1793

• Matilda is thinking about taking Nell to the Orphan House.

• The Orphan House was too crowded and Nell stays with Matilda.

• Eliza tells Matilda about how the Ogiolvie family has been.

• Daisies were falling from the sky, when they looked up they saw one house with their shutters open throwing daisies outside.

• It was Mr.Peale the painters house.

• Matilda is going with Eliza to help the sick.

  Chapter 24

  -October 1st, 1793

• They helped many many families, Mr. and Mrs. Sharp and their children, The Collbran house.

• They are helping seamstresses now.

• When they got home Joseph was crying.

• The boys and Nell have the fever.

• Matilda suggest to bring them to Bush Hill where it is colder.

• Eliza says no, and Matilda comes up with the idea to bring them to the coffeehouse.

-October 14th 1793

• A cart came, Eliza, Matilda, the boys, and Nell are going to the coffeehouse.

• They made it to the coffeehouse, Matilda's toe hit something.

• It was the painting Nathaniel gave her when her mother was sick.

• Matilda is exhausted after caring for the children for so long.

  Chapter 26

  -October 23rd, 1793

• Something rough lapped at Matilda's cheek it was Silas the cat.

• When Matilda wakes, there is frost everywhere!

• They bring the mattress outside with the children.

• Matilda is going to the market where all the gossip is, she is there to possibly find news about her mother.

• While Matilda was walking home she found Nathaniel.

  Chapter 27

  -October 30th, 1793

• The fever is going away.

• On Thanksgiving everyone was arguing about Matilda's future, she is not going to sell the coffeehouse and instead she wants to run it with Eliza.

• Eliza wasn't sure until Mother Smith made her take the job.

• Eliza accepted

• A messages came to the door and brought coffee beans.

  Chapter 28

  -November 10th, 1793

• The coffeehouse is open and very busy.

• Matilda wants to visit Polly's mother in Sunday.

• The president came to town signaling that the fever was gone.

• when they came back Mother was home.

• Everyone in the coffeehouse stood to honor Mother
