The people this quote is talking about are sinners. Edwards goes into detail about how the sin in their hearts will reflect and come back to torture them as fire in hell. He describes sinners in a way that shows that sin has already taken a hold of everything they do, claiming that they have "no interest in any Mediator."

The context is talking about how none of us are holy, except for God, and we deserve hell because of this. The Pastor goes on to talk about how God is the only thing that keeps us from falling into hell, knowing that his righteous judgement will be the thing that decides how these men spend the rest of their eternity.

The Pastor talks about this salvation as the good news, the bright side to this bleak situation. He is talking about how we can still be saved by the grace of the Lord. The Pastor has a happy tone, almost eager, because he wants the people to know that there is a way out and he wants to spread this good news about God's grace. He is implying that although we deserve hell, his love for us is so great that he calls after us. He invites us to him, even after everything that we have done, and calls us back with open arms.

As Edwards describes a day of salvation, he gives warning of what it would be like in the eyes of a sinner. He gives the listeners the question of if a lifetime of sin is worth an eternity of suffering and having to watch what you'll miss out on as people are saved. He contrasts "joy of heart" and "sorrow of heart" to relate the actions of sin or good to more than just an action and actually to emotion and heart.
