1. Cultural Museum (Smithsonian Latino Center) and PBS: Latino Americans

These resources that I selected Reflect Developing A Cultural Knowledge Base, from the Article by Geneva Gay: "Preparing For Culturally Responsive Teaching".In order to develop a knowledge base, you need to understand culture. One of the ways i decided to learn more is through the Smithsonian Latino Center. I looked through some interesting 3D collections, such as the Olmec, and different animal species. Another good resource i visited was PBS.org. PBS has a page called, "Latino Americans". There is a really great Timeline featured of important events and people in Latino History. I think that I could really use these resources in teaching. The Timeline could be used to teach my class about important events in Latino History, as well as the Museum. This would help me learn more about Latino History and show my knowledge base of it. In History, we do talk about some events involving Latinos, such as The Alamo, but with these resources, I could teach more than that. For developing a cultural diversity knowledge base, According to Geneva Gay (2002), "The knowledge that teachers need to have about cultural diversity goes beyond mere awareness of, respect for, and general recognition of the fact that ethnic groups have different values or express similar values in various ways. Thus, the second requirement for developing a knowledge base for culturally responsive teaching is acquiring detailed factual information about the cultural particularities of specific ethnic groups (e.g., African, Asian, Latino, and Native American). This is needed to make schooling more interesting and stimulating for, representative of, and responsive to ethnically diverse students" (p. 107). It is important to know detailed information, and to make schooling better for students of other ethnicity's. I feel that I can use this information to teach my students about Latino History, and to make my Latino students more interested in class. It is crucial to have a knowledge base.

This resource that I selected reflects Designing Culturally Relevant Curricula, from the Article by Geneva Gay: "Preparing for Culturally Responsive Teaching".The curriculum we teach needs to be relevant. According to Geneva Gay (2002), "Culturally responsive teachers know how to determine the multicultural strengths and weaknesses of curriculum designs and instructional materials and make the changes necessary to improve their overall quality. These analyses should focus on the quantity, accuracy, complexity, placement, purpose, variety, significance, and authenticity of the narrative texts, visual illustrations, learning activities, role models, and authorial sources used in the instructional materials" (p. 108). Even though there are State Standards, we can still make some modifications. For example, if i were teaching civil rights, I could discuss Latino Civil Rights. I have seen this taught here, as I took Government and Politics. One article I found was from CREDE (Center for Research on Education, Diversity & Excellence). The Article discusses effective teaching practices for Hispanic students. One of the things I learned was that the curriculum needs to be relevant to them. According to Padrón, Waxman, and Rivera (2002), "Instruction must specifically address the concerns of Hispanic students who come from different cultures and who are often trying to learn a new language. The home and community environment must be tapped into and connected to students' learning in addition to focusing on knowledge learned in the classroom". What this means for me is, I need to make sure there is relevance in what I teach to them. They need to understand the material, and I need to understand their background. I have more knowledge of this from the Journal I did on Latinos. I need to make sure my curriculum is relevant to all students, and I need to make sure there is diversity. This is easy to do for history.

3. Article From Latin Times: Study Finds Teachers Have Lower Expectations For Latino Students

According to Baral (2014), "researchers found that teachers have lower expectations for Hispanic students. Specifically, teachers believed that Hispanic students were 42 percent less likely to graduate college than white students". It is hard to believe that teachers would have low expectations for their Latino students. We need to set high expectaions for all students. According to Baral (2014), "The concern with these findings lies in the fact that previous research has found a strong correlation between student achievement and teacher expectation. This phenomenon, also known as the pygmalion effect, would mean that the low expectation from teachers in Hispanic and African-American students would translate into poor performance.". We as teachers need to have high expectations for all students so they can succeed. If we show our students we don't care, then they wont care and will not do a good job in school. I know that I need to make sure I have high expectations for my Latino students, and all my students so they will succeed.

The First video I found is titled "Struggles Immigrant Students Face". The video Highlights Latino students and teachers. One student talked about how there were no Latino clubs, but he got help from a Spanish teacher at the new school he went to. One teacher describes the difficulties of their language barrier, and how that effects tests, and tests required to graduate. The teacher said they cant help them, and students cant use anything to help them translate. They can only use a dictionary. The students also have trouble keeping up with the teacher, and the students gets really lost. One teacher said that some teachers just simply ignore these students. One of the biggest points I pulled out of this was that teachers need to be interested in the students and care about them, more than designing the program. This keeps students motivated to learn, if the teacher cares. We also need to understand their culture. We need to understand were they came from and what they think and believe. They need to be comfortable in the classroom. These students become frustrated because their learning needs aren't met. This video has taught me that I need to make sure my Latino student's learning needs are met. I need to make sure they get help on their tests and make sure that the school I work at has adequate resources to help them. I also know I need to make sure I am interested in my students lives. It is so important.

The second video I found is titled "Hispanic Parental Involvement-Student Academic Success". The video talks about the performing gaps of Latino students v.s. other students. Hispanic students said their failures in school are more related to parental involvement. What I learned is that parents need to better support their children in school. Not for just Latino students, but all students. I need to make sure that parents know they need to show encouragement to their students. This is an interesting point of view, because when I did the journal for Latinos, I researched and found that most Latino parents put a high value on education, and expect them to do well. I want to make sure that my Latino students are motivated and ready to achieve academic success.

The third video I found is titled "Hispanic Academic Achievement-Why Hispanic Immigration is Different". The video talks about the culture of Hispanics. Family is their core to everything. They stick together. They also have an extremely hard work ethic. They work hard to provide for their family and put hard work in to improve quality of life. They hold onto their faith. They have faith in their goals. Hispanic immigration is different. They are the largest immigration group. They account a large percentage of growth in the U.S. Hispanics also come from many different countries. Quality education provides the gateway to a quality life. For Hispanics, the challenge is mastering English. These Hispanics take on a new life when they come to the U.S. Technology helps Hispanic Immigrants maintain their culture when they are here. They can still communicate via web in their native language etc. There isn't a day that we don't hear some bad negative news on Hispanics (Immigration reform, negative reception). This video shows me how Latinos are really hard workers. They want to make a better life for themselves and their families. They value family and hard work. This just gives me a better understanding of the Latino students I will have in my classroom. I think that we can learn a lot from Latinos. I really like their values on faith and family.
