Characterization- In the book Summer is very terrified. She is worried that she will be in the cellar for as long as some of the girls that are already in there. She is a very smart girl who is constantly thinking of ways to escape. Summer is the type of person who is kinda shy at first, but once she gets to know you she will open up. She has a big heart and cares a lot for her family, especially her boyfriend Lewis. Here is an example of that "My mum was right: the longer you are with a man the grosser they became. Still, I wouldn't change him. You're supposed to accept someone you love for who they were, so I accepted his messiness."

2. Setting- The setting in the majority of this book is in the cellar of Clovers house, in present day.
"...I whispered, staring at the closed, heavy cellar door. The thing was thick, like it'd been reinforced or something." (23)
Except when the story goes back to tell a story from a certain characters past, it says the different time period in the title.

3. Structure- Exposition/ Summer decided one night that she wanted to go out to the local club in her town. When she arrived, she met one of her friends there but they then realized that another one of there friends is was not there, and she was supposed to be. So they left the club and split up to go find her.
Rising Action/ As Summer was wandering around the town in search for her friend she decided to go to the park. As she walked around the park, she got an eery feeling. She then heard someone call out "Lily", in a very mellow tone. She looked into the shadows and saw a tall dark haired man. He called her over and when she got close enough to him he grabbed her and drug her to his van, and drove off. When she got to his house he put her in a cellar with a couple other girls
Climax/ After about 7 months of Summer, or Lily, living in the cellar things began to get worse. Authorities had somewhat stopped searching, but her family for sure hadn't, until Summer"s phone was found near the canal. The then drug the canal and found multiple dead bodies. One Clover found out about that, he began to get uncomfortable. One day he went out to "help" Summer's family search for her, and he met Lewis, Summer's boyfriend. He could tell that Lewis sensed something unusual about him, which made him nervous. Lewis immediately got a bad gut feeling about Clover, so he decided to go break into his house. When he broke into his house he found many different pairs of women shoes, and newspaper clippings about Summer from the previous months. That led to the police getting a search warrant for Clover's house. Clover knew the house was about to get searched so as the police were breaking in he ran down to the cellar and tried to kill all of the girls. The police caught him and put him into custody, although a few of the girls didn't make it.
Falling Action/ During the police raid Clover hurt Summer pretty badly, so when she finally woke up in the hospital she wasn't herself. It took her a little bit to actually snap back in. The first couple of weeks after her being back things between her and Lewis weren't the same, but they slowly got back to normal. Clover was put into a psychiatric hospital. 
"Neither do I. Listen, she's not herself, so don't expect much. We just need to help her snap out of it, help her remember who she is."" (320)
This story also has flashbacks of things from the past about certain characters. This helps you relate to reasons why something is happening.

4. Figurative Language- In the book Clover names the girls he kidnaps after flowers. He names them after flowers because flowers are perfect and don't have flaws, and full of natural beauty. They haven't been corrupted by the world. He names the girls flower names because he doesn't want their minds to be corrupted by the world, and them to be able to be real and natural.
"He likes things that are pure, and he can't stand mess or germs."

Here is an example of a simile.
"'I'm not entirely sure, but I think he wants a family. The perfect family. He choose girls that he thinks are perfect, like flowers" (16)

5. Narration- The story is told in first person in each persons chapter of the book. But if you look at the whole book it could also be told in 3rd person omniscient.
"I gave him one last kiss and slipped out of the room." (3)

6. Language-The tone of this story is very dark and gruesome. Clover takes on killing multiple girls with no problem. "He spoke so calmly it sent a chill down my spine. Without another word from either of them, he took a step forward. There was no hesitation when he shoved the knife into her stomach." (82)
The mood of the author is very suspenseful and hostile. I infer that Clover went through some kind of childhood trauma that is why he is how he is. "I took a step closer and my stomach turned. They were all pictures of Colin and a women that looked like him---his mum? Kissing!" (298)

Characterization-  Alton Carter was a young boy who always had nothing but good expectations. He was a very troublesome kid but that was a reflection of his home life. He was a very athletic and capable young man who just needed to be put in the right situation to succeed. He tried to always see the best in people and look past all of the bad stuff. "There was something in me, however, that made me grasp hope, like a drowning swimmer grabs a rope." (1)

2. Setting- The setting of the story began in 1974, a few years after the civil rights movement, when Alton was born and continued though out his adolescent years. It took place in many different places as Alton moved around. It started in Stillwater, Oklahoma. From there he moved to Perry, OK, to Sand Springs, OK, to Perkins, Boley, and then to Cushing.
"I was only back at Stilllwater youth shelter for a few days when my caseworker told me she was taking me to the Oklahoma Lions Boys Ranch in Perkins, Oklahoma, about fifteen minutes south of home." (84)

3. Structure- Exposition/ Alton, his brothers and sister, and his mom were living with her moms boyfriend at the time, sometimes he was nice and other times he was not. One night in particular though he began to get physically abusive. Him, and Alton's mother began to get into a fight, and he started to beat her. The kids tried to help defend her but then he started to beat them as well. That next morning Alton's mother decided to escape. They took the car but it didn't get too far before it broke down. So, they began walking to their aunts house.
Rising Action/ While they were living at their grandparents house, a lot of their other family started moving in as well. Most of the moms were never around, but all of the uncles did stay. Most of them didn't have jobs, or their own house obviously. They did drugs in the house and really just made the load extra heavy for the grandparents to carry. Uncle Stevie was always the abusive one though. But in particular to Alton. One night he got so abusive towards Alton that he threw him down the staircase, and then chased him and started to beat him up quite aggressively. Alton managed to escape. He called the cops and they came to the house. He was scared they wouldn't believe him. When the cops got there Alton's grandmother tried to get them to go away by telling them nothing was wrong, but they listened to Alton. They took Uncle Stevie into custody and, Alton to a shelter. From the shelter, he was taken to a farm for boys. Climax/ While Alton was at the farm he suffered abuse as well. The farm leader punished the boys with extreme measures. But that was nothing new for Alton to have to experience. Although it was enough to the point where he was fired. The person they replaced him with was just as bad. So Alton decided to run away. Once he went to the DHS office, he was placed in a foster home. The foster home that he was placed in though just so happened to be the people who first lead the farm. So he decided to run away. He was then placed in another foster home with some elderly people. They were really nice and it was a good home, but the town was not. He found trouble at the school and he just thought that this wasn't they place for him, so he called DHS to come get him. Falling Action/  The next foster home he was place in was perfect for him. At first he didn't think he would like it but in the end it was exactly what he needed. He got involved in sports and was very successful with that. He was glad that he had finally found a home where he felt safe and loved in.
"I decided to ask Phil, Marcy, and my grandparents. Phil and Marcy were excited about being asked and told me they wouldn't miss is for the world." (169)

4. Figurative Language- The story quite frequently uses similes. "It always felt like the congregation was staring at us like we were demon-possessed boys in need of saving." (93)

5. Narration- The story is written in first person, from Alton''s perspective. "I wanted to know why she hadn't stepped in to save us from Ray." (8)

6. Language- The mood of this story is very deep and raw. In the story it talks about how Alton and his siblings were continuously beaten and abused, physically and mentally. It goes into much detail about their home life and how they had to go through so much that kids their age should never have to. "'Hesitantly and slowly, I stuck my arm out over the hot burner. As I flinched from the first blast of heat, Uncle Stevie grabbed my forearm and shoved it down onto the burner grate." (53)
The author in the story uses diction in the story such as afraid and hopeless to describe the cruelty that the children suffered through. "We hovered by the door for what seemed like forever. Helpless. Afraid. Hopeless." (12)
The tone of the author is very emotional and real. He tells these stories from his own experiences, therefore you can almost feel how he felt at that point in time and you can sense the raw emotion through the writing. "And within a few days the teasing stopped---that tends to happen when you are comfortable in your own skin. More and more of my life seemed like the life of one of those happy, normal, ordinary kids whose lives I had always envied." (153)

Characterization- Quinn Gallo is a 18 year old girl l who's life has been greatly impacted by the loss of her best friend. She is  very headstrong, and knows her worth and what she deserves. Although, her past has really taken a tole on her mental health and the way that she now looks at a lot of things in life. She always feels like she needs to be there for people and fix them in a way. She likes to be the different one and doesn't mind to stand out. "I know it's not pretty. Neither was I when I put on Grammy's glasses. But that was kind of the point." (13)

2. Setting- The setting of this story is present day on the Jersey Shore, the summer after Quinn graduated. After she graduated she moved in with her aunt at her beach house away from her home town. So she is not originally from here. "When I fled my small town after graduation to spend the summer at my aunt's beach house." (13)

3. Structure- Exposition/ Quinn moves in with her aunt to her beach house in Jersey Shore after she graduated and had a whole fall out with her old music teacher. She thought that it was time for a fresh start and that she needed to get away. "Here at the Jersey Shore, no one knows me as the half-naked girl who had to be rescued from her band teacher's Toyota Corolla by the Jaws of Life." (13)
Rising Action/ Quinn meets this guy from a band that plays at the restaurant she works at named Malcolm. They begin to get closer and eventually begin to fall in love. They spend every day together and get to know each other very well. One day Malcolm told her that he is a recovering opioid addict. He trusted her enough with this information that he decided to give her the remaining of his pills to keep them. One night he was having a hard time and thought it would be okay to take them out of her purse. This caused a big argument between them.
Climax/ After the argument and not talking for multiple days, Quinn was at loss of what to do. She decided that it would be best for her to quit the band and for go all the plans she had made to go on tour with Malcolm that summer. She started making plans for herself and her future and started moving on. She even started to make a mends with the people back home, and her mother.
Falling Action/ After a few weeks of Quinn quitting the band, they had to start looking for other people to audition for her spot so they could still go on tour. But some of her other friends in the band refused to let that happen. They asked her to come back. But Quinn felt that it would only be right if she heard it from Malcolm because she didn't want to overstep. After days of waiting for a call from Malcolm, he finally showed up to her house. Resolution/ They talked things out and finally got things settled between the two of them. At first the thought that it was still the best for the both of them to not be together, but that didn't last long. After expressing their true feelings to one another they ended up back together. Although, Quinn still didn't go on tour with him, just because she had her life already planned out that would benefit her in more way then going on tour.

4. Figurative Language- In this story the author uses an onomatopoeia. "But me playing drums in a rock band? Pfff." (24)

5. Narration- This story is written in first person, from Quinn's perspective. "I didn't want to be the old Quinn Gallo anymore."(13)

6. Language- The tone of this story is very carefree and living life on the edge. The characters in this story are at the age where they can almost do whatever they want, so they are out in the middle of summer getting to live their life freely.  Although when you look at the mood of this story, you get a very raw and real emotion from this story. Quinn talks about how she takes the blame for her best friends death and how it caused her to have suicidal thoughts, when you look at the real world, this unfortunately is a large problem today. "I had started off scratching and cutting myself in places no one could see. My upper thigh, my lower belly. That day, I don't know what possessed me to cut my wrist, but I knew as soon as  pierced that thin skin above my bluish veins that I'd gone too far." Characterization- America Singer is the main character in this book. In the beginning she came across as a very shy girl. But as the story progresses and she begins her process in the selection she begins to change. She begins to develop into a confident young lady. She knows what she deserves and doesn't let anyone get in the way of that and is not afraid to speak up to anyone. "I'm not changing everything about me to cater to some guy I don't even know." (111)

2. Setting- The setting of this story  takes place in the future, in the kingdom of Illea. It starts at the beginning of the Selection.  "I remember reading in a timeworm history book that all the major holidays used to be cramped into the winter months." (10)

3. Structure- Exposition/ America gets the registration letter to be entered in the Selection. When she talks to her secret boyfriend Aspen about it he says she should enter. After they have this conversation it causes tension between the two and they end up splitting ways.
Rising Action/ After the breakup, that gave her a little more motivation to join the Selection, so she registered. She did not have much confidence in herself or her ranking in the Selection, until she got selected to be one of the final 35.
Climax/ After a few weeks of being at the palace there was an attack on the kingdom. This caused some of the girls to question whether this was going to be the life for them. The attack somehow began to help the bond between American and Maxon grow. They started talking more and more about themselves and who they truly are. Until one night Maxon kissed America. She didn't think she had any feelings towards him until this occured. “I didn’t want to hear about that. I knew that there was something small and  tenuous between us, and I didn’t want to deal with anything that might change it.” (342)
Falling Action/ Maxon and America get into an argument over another girl, because America is starting to get jealous because of her growing feelings towards Maxon. But it just so happened that Aspen, her ex boyfriend is now a guard. After the argument, they met up and rekindled the fire they once had, but secretly of course.
Resolution/ There was another major attack on the kingdom. This caused a few girls to leave and go home. Although, America was still tied between Maxon her new best friend, that she is beginning to have feelings for. Or Aspen, her first love.

4. Figurative Language- In this story the author uses a metaphor. "Maxon spoke almost as if he was bored, like he'd seen this happen a million times." (300)

5. Narration- This story is in 1st person from the point of view of America. "I didn't want to be royalty."(7)

6. Language- In this excerpt from the story, the author uses ellipses to show America's strong feelings against the Selection. "The idea of being entered into a contest for the whole country to watch as this stuck-up little wimp picked the most gorgeous and shallow one of the bunch to be the silent, pretty face that stood beside him on TV . . . it was enough to make me scream. Characterization- In this story, there are two main characters. One being Nandy Smith, and the other is Tyson Trice. Nandy is a privileged girl that lives in the wealthy town of Pacific Hills, California. She has always been popular and very outgoing. She is very involved in her school, as she is in student council, student government, and community service. She is not really a person for change, and likes thing to go her way. "Right now, you're probably pacing around your pool in a Gucci bikini while your happily-in-love parents are inside preparing dinner together. God, Nan, you could use this delinquent to spice things up." (26)  The next character in this story is Tyson Trice. He is a foster kid who was originally from the outskirts of Pacific Hill, in a town called Lindenwood, California. About 6 months prior to being moved to a new home he was shot. Trice most of the time keeps to himself. He doesn't come from a very good home life so he isn't a very hopeful person. He is a little rough around the edges, just because of where he comes from. But he means well. "I didn't respond. Home was a meaningless word to me now. Misty peeked at me. 'Aren't you going to say anything?' 'I can leave as soon as I turn eighteen right? That was all that mattered. F... the rest." (19)

2. Setting- This story takes place in Pacific Hills, California. It is told in present day. "Moving into the setting of Pacific Hills was sure to be hell, but at least I would be with a black family." (20)

3. Structure- Exposition/ Tyson gets moved in to live with the Davis', because his father killed his mother, and shot him. When Nandy and Trice were little, they were best friends, until Tyson left Pacific Hills one day and never came back. So, they haven''t seen each other in almost 10 years. But Nandy hates the idea that they are moving in someone from Lindenwood, and that her parents didn't give her any opportunity for input on this big life changing decision to their family. They try everything they can to avoid each other.
Rising Action/ Nandy finally decided to give Tyson a chance and try to talk to him. Nandy ended up smarting off some very hurtful things to Tyson, which caused his to leave Pacific Hills for a night and go visit some old friends back home in Lindenwood. When Tyson gets back, Nandy decides to go and apologize to him, because she didn't know the whole story behind why he had to move in with the Davis' in the first place. That night that they talked, they revealed how much they missed each other, and old feelings began to spark between the two of them. They began to spend a little more time together to try and make up for all those years lost. Although, this was a problem because Nandy has\d a boyfriend, named Chad. So even though they have old feelings for each other, Nandy is madly in love with her boyfriend. Tyson realizes that he probably won't ever get a chance, so in the meanwhile he moves on to someone new, who just so happens to be Nandy's best friend, Shayne.
Climax/ Nandy didn't necessarily know until the cotillion came around, her true feelings for Tyson. She sees all the time that Shayne and Tyson spends together, which it never really bothered her all that bad, until she realizes that they were starting to fall pretty hard for each other. Then she found out that Shayne was going to ask Tyson to the cotillion, and then that was really when she became jealous. Because before, she used to just have Tyson to herself. They were all they had. They were their first kisses, crushes, and loves. And now Nandy may never get that back. ""And then, you never cared if you were on the outside and I watched you be happy with them, with her. And it burns."  "She wouldn't look at me anymore. 'I'm jealous.' "(235)
Falling Action/ Nandy and Tyson finally became public with their relationship, but it was not approved by many people, being Nandy's parents in particular. After mounds of convincing, they finally allowed it, although Tyson had to move into the pool house. Until one night Tyson got a call from a friend needing some help, but all along he was being set up. He went to the car shop where he was supposed to meet one of his friends, but turns out his friend only wanted him to come so he could shoot him. So Tyson took yet another gun shot.
Resolution/ Tyson ended up surviving the gun shot wound, and his and Nandy's relationship continued to grow strongly.

4. Figurative Language- In this story the author uses an idiom.  "I giggled as I accepted the flowers. 'Is this your way of buttering me up?'"(37)

5. Narration- This story is told in first person, but from two different people's perspectives. Trice: ""It's Trice." I had asked her to call me that from jump street. No one called me Tyson." (21)  Nandy: Maybe I was acting childishly, but I felt like a kid with the way my parents had shut me out on the biggest detail of all when it came to the boy coming to stay with us out of nowhere." (26)

6. Language- The authors diction in this story is italicization. She uses italicization to derive the image that Tyson has died, and is talking in another presence. "I could only imagine how Nandy felt in the aftermath of my death." I was sure my chance at winning his heart had passed. what use could he have for me now?" (13)

2. Setting- The setting of this story is in the kingdom of Illea, in the future. The story starts 2 weeks into the selection. "Illea is a great nation but a young one, all things considered." (35)

3. Structure- In the beginning of this story, Amberly gets sick and is suffering tremendously from her symptoms. She’s afraid that Prince Clarkson will not want to marry her if she is a sick girl. Then, towards the middle of the story the Prince notices her because she is sick, and he ends up getting her the proper medical care. After this, they started going on dates and spending more time together. Until one night Amberly and Prince Clarkson come across the king and queen fighting. This makes Amberly realize that royalty is not everything that it is said to be. Towards the end, the prince decides that Amberly is who he wants to marry, and he makes her the new queen of Illea. "You are going to be the next queen of Illea." (86)

4. Figurative Language- The author uses similes in this story to describe how one feels. "My face feels like it burst open." (46)

5. Narration- This story is told in first person from the perspective of Amberly. "I was going to miss every opportunity to make an impression on Prince Clarkson if this kept up." (9)

6. Language- In the story the author uses words like obedient, tasteful, and silent, to describe how the girls must be in order to marry the prince. This also adds a very strict tone with these words coming from the Queen. It makes you realize how serious she is about the situation. "If you want to marry my son and live in my home, you will be everything I tell you to be. Obedient. Tasteful. And silent."
