Alliya. Q2: What suggestion do you have for a friend who is trying to overcome their gaming addiction.

First Point: Firstly, one suggestion I have for a friend who is trying to overcome their gaming addiction is to instill a " phone-lock ".

Elaboration: A " phone-lock " is a physical box and a device that locks a phone for a certain period of time in minutes or seconds.

Evidence: No matter how much force or pressure is used to break the box, it is not possible to break it as it is quite indestructible. Even with tools or weapons.

Explanation: This will help a friend maintain their usage of their handphone for a period of time until it develops habits and values such as self-disciple and responsibility.

Experience: I also had a friend who would use their phone from 12am till 12pm everyday, 24/7. There was no stopping in between unless it's eating or showering or sleeping. I suggest that this " phone-lock " would be useful for her.

Second Point: Secondly, another suggestion to add for my friend who is trying to overcome their gaming addiction is to take them out for dates or picnics.

Example: Me and that friend could book a particular time and date to go out for S.E.A aquarium dates or picnics at Marina Barrage on a cooling and cloudy day.

Evidence: This allows the friend to stray from her phone even for a few hours to experience the beauty of nature and its animals or allow the bond and relationship to grow stronger between the both of us.

Experiences: Additionally, I also had a friend who would stay at home the whole day, playing computer games or doom-scrolling through social media, without seeing the sunlight or touching grass basically like a vampire who is allergic to the daylight. Occasionally, I would bring them out to Gardens By the Bay and keep her phone with me for awhile until we go home.

Alternative Point: However, others may argue that.. my friend could put a fake phone and keep their real phone hidden from their parents or from me and their other friends while the fake phone is in the " phone-lock " or stashed away with me when going out.

Example: They can use their real phone hidden under the pillows or they can take out their phones during our dates or picnic and ruin the whole bond and turn into an argument for displaying such acts of betrayal.

Evidence: They can also ditch the plans we made just so that they can stay at their home doom-scrolling for hours while I wait at the site just for them to tell me they are not going to reach or make it in time.

Experience: I was with my mother one day at Flower dome in Gardens by the Bay while I waited for my friend to shower and get ready to meet there. Instead they gave up and stayed at home.

Link: This is not one of the suggestions for a friend who is trying to overcome their gaming addiction.

Restate the point: Thus, if we people do not implement change to using our phones, we can become slaves to technology. Do we want technology to take control of us or take control of technology?

Zixuan

P: I think that parents should definitely control how much time a teenager child spends on gaming because

E: firstly i feel that without parent’s interference, when a teenage child spends excessive time on gaming, it could lead to issues like gaming addiction. When controls are not enforced by parents, teenage child may unknowingly spend too much time gaming and this may cause them to forget about their daily routines as they may get too engrossed. Forgetting about their daily routine can also cause teenage child to neglect their studies.

E: Research have shown that teenagers who spend excessive time gaming will experience a decline in academic and life performance. L: Controlling gaming time will then maintain a healthy balance between their academic responsibilities and everyday activities hence developing a well rounded lifestyle.

P: Secondly, i feel controlling gaming time will ensure that teenager child spends sufficient time on developing social skills instead of gaming.

E: Excessive gaming can hinder a teenage child’s ability to form and maintain meaningful interpersonal relationships.

E: Research indicates that some teenager who spends excessive time gaming are less likely to engage in face to face interaction as they are used to spending time on their own gaming. L: Limiting gaming time will then encourage teenage child to participate in broader range of social skills and by doing this, expand and develop their social circle and networking skills which will build the teenage personality and shape their identity, allowing them to thrive in various social environment.

However, others may argue that parents should not control how much time a teenage child spends on gaming because it can foster independence and self control. Having parents not interfere will put teenage child responsible to manage their own gaming time and this develops their time management skills and self discipline.Instead of imposing strict time limits, parents should focus more on guiding their teenage child to make balanced choices and also build a understanding between parents and teenage child to strengthen parent-child relationships

Overcoming gaming addiction is not easy, so I would recommend my friends these strategies to help them.

Firstly the can try to create a schedule. This ensures that they are busy and preoccupied throughout the day, but also acts as a distraction from gaming. In the schedule, one can include their favourite things to do, for example hobbies. As I said previously in question 1, I have a friend who is a game addict and is not physically fit. I recommend him to reserve a spot to work out together with me at the gym, to improve his physical health, and to keep his mind off gaming. Over the efficient use of this, I believe they can get over their gaming addiction and improve both physical and mental health.

Secondly, one can try to limit access to their electronic devices which is the gateway to games. One can try uninstall all the games on their phones and computer. Based on personal experience, most game addicts have the mindset that because they have aces to games, the will proceed to play the games. By going on a digital detox, it can help them to focus in other areas such as physical and metal health, as well as their studies. For example, when I was out on vacation, I locked my phone at the hotel and thus I was able to fully enjoy and make full use of my time there. Over the efficient use of this, I believe they can get over their gaming addiction and enjoy all the benefits it brings.

Eugene

I think parents should control the amount of time their kids spend on gaming.

Firstly, young children lack discipline and self control. As they lack the ability to control themselves due to still being young, they may not be able limit themselves when it comes to playing games. This has the potential to be harmful to them. For example, unrestricted gaming can result in them being socially awkward due to a lack of communication and only gaming. Furthermore, they may lose sleep time due to favouring gaming over sleeping. Thus, children should be controlled by their parents on their gaming due to their lack of self control.

Secondly, children may become addicted to gaming. When kids play games, they may find it fun and become addicted to said game. As a result they may become unable to stop playing and may neglect other things. For example, they may neglect their academics which can cause their academic performance to deteriorate. Children may also play games surreptitiously which can further worsen their addiction. Thus parents should control their kids' gaming as they can become addicted.

However, some may argue that parents should not control their kids' gaming. Instead, they should be the ones to control themselves. They may think that this can be an appropriate opportunity for them to develop self discipline. For example, kids could develop when to stop gaming instead of continuing which develops their discipline.

In conclusion, I feel that parents should control their children's gaming time as not doing so can result in dire consequences which may affect their child exponentially.

Cahira

I disagree with this statement. Firstly, children are born into a modern era. They grew up with the Internet so this makes them technologically driven. They have easier access to mobile games such as Roblox and Minecraft, which are an integral part of their childhood. Hence, children are more inclined to be addicted to smartphones.

Secondly, there is a lack of supervision from the parents. These children are always given mobile devices like iPads no matter what place and time. For example, when I go to restaurants, I will always see children play their iPads, even if they have already gotten their food. Their parents do not even have the initiative to stop them. This could be because since parents are busy with work, there is a lack of time for hands-on parenting. Thus, they give their children mobile devices like smartphones to keep them entertained but without parental control, their children will be succumbed to smartphone addiction.

However, adults are addicted too. Most adults are busy with work, which makes the stressed and want to escape the chaos of life. They will go on social media and watch, for example, Instagram reels, which gives them a sense of comfort after a long and tiring day. This could lead to them doomscrolling and watching these reels become a mental escape to them. Therefore, they can become addicted too.

In conclusion, I still believe that children are more addicted to smartphones. This can be prevented though, as parents can exercise better control.

Iris

One of the many ways my friend is able to overcome their addiction is by setting clear goals and limits. For example, they can set plan their time wisely and limit their screen time for 2 to 3 hours per day and after it is over, parents play an important role and they should lock up their devices to prevent the temptation. A timetable or schedule could be set to help with time management too. If everything fails, they can go on a digital detox and seek counselling from trusted adults. By having concrete goals, it helps them to stay focused in the long run and would help reduce gaming time which would benefit them.

Another way my friend can overcome their addiction is to participate in alternative activities whether if it is held indoors or outdoors. Engaging in such activities helps keep their mind off of gaming and they would even be able to explore new hobbies and interests, enriching their life rather than them just sitting and staring blankly at the screens of their devices. This gives them a mental and physical escape away from gaming and gives them a chance to be present in the moment. While doing so, they can meet people with similar interests, broadening their social circle which would support them in stopping their gaming addiction and shapes their identity.

Kanimozi

I think to help my friend overcome his or hers's gaming addiction, we need to explore why they are so obsessed with the game. I suspect my friend might be addicted to the game because of the false accomplishments and satisfaction and the social connection my friend might have to the gaming world.

So, one of my suggestions for a friend trying to overcome their gaming addiction is limiting their gaming time. By spending less time in the game my friend can put aside more time for more important things that can benefit his or her future. Some ways to keep their time in control is by using a tracker or timetable. This will help my friend to have more time to pursue their realistic goals which will inspire them to work harder towards it. With less time spent in the game, my friend can strengthen their resolve against gaming and eventually overcome their gaming addiction.

Another way my friend can overcome their gaming addiction is connecting and socialising with real people. This can help to improve their perspective of the world and get more acquainted with spending time with real humans. For example, my friend can join recreational activities like clubs. This will help my friend improve their emotional connection to the real world and be less reliant on virtual connections. My friend can overcome their gaming addiction with positive influence from these new peers.

With gaming being stress-relief for most of the world, it might be hard for my friend to overcome it immediately. However, if it is out of sight, it will be out of mind, so my friend can take baby steps to beat his gaming addiction by controlling his time and making socially reconnecting in the real world.

Lakssitaa

Helping a friend overcome a gaming addiction involves offering support, understanding, and practical advice. I would encourage them to set specific, achievable goals for reducing gaming time. For example, they could start by cutting back an hour a day and gradually reduce further.I would encourage him to create a schedule. I would assist them in creating a balanced daily schedule that includes time for gaming, but also for other activities like studying, exercising, and socializing. I would help them explore new hobbies and interests that can replace gaming time. This could include sports, reading, music, or volunteering.Suggest setting limits on gaming time and sticking to them. This can be done through timers, alarms, or even using apps designed to monitor and limit screen time. I would also them Encourage them to maintain a healthy lifestyle by getting enough sleep, eating well, and exercising regularly. If he needs further help i would recommend them to talk to someone they trust about their addiction. This could be a family member, friend, or a professional counselor. I would also help them to identify what triggers their urge to game. Understanding these triggers can help them find better ways to cope with stress or boredom.
