The narrator had gotten a message from his old friend, Roderick Usher. Roderick mentioned that he had been suffering from tons of illnesses, causing him to suffer from a mental disorder. Roderick and the narrator were best friends during their youth. Roderick came from a once notable family, called the Ushers. The narrator is then seen to approach the mysterious House of Usher, the home of Roderick Usher. The house has an eerie atmosphere to it. It is surrounded by a dried up moat. This quote gives the audience a glimpse of what the narrator saw when he first arrived at the House of Usher. It explains how the house has this really creepy vibe or atmosphere to it. The house is almost like a medieval castle. Since, medieval castles are filled with mystery and are apparently haunted. Theme: Values feelings over logic.

Immediately in the quote the narrator says how he's offset from the sight of the Usher House. From this he even notices how without reason the building scares him.
