Despite Ms. Stefanska being found with the documents, Anja is truly to blame. She had been working with the communists by decode messages and then communicating with them. Anja was originally in possession of the legal documents. However, when she found out that the police were looking for her, she panicked and hide the documents at Ms. Stefanska's house. When the police arrived at the house, they found the documents and arrested Ms. Stefanska rather than Anja.

Aidan McNally

The character that I chose is Vladek. I chose him because we really get insight on his life in the chapters that we have read so far. We learned about his time during World War II and what was happening during that time. I learned that he was married to Anja, but had a woman named Lucia that would not stop thinking about him and later he would be married to Mala after Anja killed herself. Vladek revived a letter from the government telling him that he has been called into duty. We also learned that his left eye was hemorrhaged and had to be replaced by a glass eye. When he was fighting in the army, he killed at least one man, and he has many dreams in his grandfathers voice about when he will leave the camp. When he comes home, he has to hide that he is Jewish and poses as Polish man. This shows how serious your identity mattered at the time of this war, and Vladek wanted to come home to see his wife but he could only do so if he posed as a Polish man and not who he truly is.

Through Art’s dad the reader experiences his constant reminiscing over the past, the biggest being his past love for his wife, or Art’s mother. Vladek complains about his current wife with every chance he gets and let’s Art know just how much he misses his mother. Besides Art’s mother Vladek speaks fondly of his past up to chapter 3, though it does begin to get a little dark when he talks about his time working for the Nazis. The darkest moment seems to be when he gets to camp and he’s told about how the 600 who arrived before were slaughtered. Another dark thought is what happened to the Rabi, who Vladek says he’s never heard from again. All of these hint at Vladek having a bit of survivors guilt.

Luck in the context of this story is the occurrence of fortunate situations that were not ensured by the character. For example, when Vladek is required to go to the stadium to show his papers, his cousin who runs a stand there protects him. This kindness was outside of Vladek’s control so he was very lucky. Another example was when Vladek bribed the guards to transfer Anja to his camp and the guards actually honored their promise and transferred her. This was lucky because they could have just taken his bribe and not transferred her. Vladek’s survival was nearly entirely caused by luck and many others were not as lucky. He tried to maintain value as a prisoner but at any moment a guard could have decided to kill him.
