Who is to blame for grades? Mrs. Buhrman

Many seventh graders at Beulah Park Middle School will be heard lamenting when grade cards post on November 9th. The transition from intermediate to middle school can be tough; students move from having two or three teachers to having seven, potentially all with different expectations. But many seventh graders are not taking steps to hold themselves accountable. Students have been heard blaming teachers for poor grades.

One student in Mrs. Buhrman's homeroom yelled out, "I hope you're happy I'll be grounded for the next 9 weeks because I have a C in your class!" Mrs. Pace, another seventh and eighth grade ELA teacher, reported that one of her students told their parents that Mrs. Pace "won't help me." Mrs. Pace has pulled this student every day during homeroom for extra help for the last three weeks.

There is more to be learned here. What can be done to help students realize they are responsible for their own grades? Do they need to learn study skills? Why do students think teachers need to give them answers? And most importantly, is this setting them up for success in the real world?

Look around and look alive! Many students are very excited to participate in Beulah Parks spirit week, taking place between October 24th through 28th, 2022.

The themes consist of such:
Monday: Homeroom Wars
Tuesday: Duo Day
Wednesday: Western Wednesday
Thursday: School Colors
Friday: Freaky Friday

Every way you turn, you can view students dressed in CRAZY outfits and accessories to match the themes each day. Wearing crazy cowboy hats, fairy wings, dog and cat outfits, and khakis. Students are trading various accessories with each other.

It is Friday, October 28th, and many students are wearing khakis, button-up shirts, ties, and styled hair. Teachers are returning the participation, however! Dressing up with saggy pants and crop tops.

Spirit Week definitely has followed the students home. It is one of the only things students speak about when they get home. "Every day when my child gets home, it's all they speak of, their spirit week themes. It's crazy!" claims a parent of one of the students at Beulah Park. "I'm just excited our school is doing something fun!" exclaims the student.

Seems Beulah park should have spirit week more often. Many students and teachers at Beulah park will be sure to participate.

Students are outraged and tired of waiting for 2nd trip buses.

Some of the bus riders have comments on the situation.

On Monday, October 24th, Mrs. Buhrmans second period class witnessed a frightening occurrence at Beulah Park Middle School. Sloan Genson, a student, made an effort to participate in spirit week. She wore a very long, pink dress to school that day. Upon questioning, she describes her dress as dangerous and annoying.

As the class walked through the halls of the school, she stumbled quite a few times. But the most disturbing time was when she almost plunged to her death on the staircase. She could have been seriously injured or killed if it weren't for her notebook, which distracted her and caused her to slow down. "She should wear shorter dresses or at least pull it up a little when she's going up the stairs, because I don't want to see her fall down the stairs," her classmate Shyann Polizzi remarked. Hopefully this near-death experience will motivate Mrs. Buhrmans class to choose clothing wisley and to be cautious on the stairs.

You may have seen this over the news and this has caused quite a commotion. Putin has threatened Ukraine by telling them he'll protect his country with "all means available." He threatened to use nuclear weapons against Ukraine. This may not seem too big a threat until you hear that Russia has the most extensive nuclear weapon stash in the world. Russia is now holding its first nuclear drills since invading Ukraine.

Joe Biden has commented that this is the most serious "Prospect of armageddon" in around 60 years. Joe Biden has also added that he knows Putin "Fairly well" and that he knows that Putin is “not joking when he talks about potential use of tactical nuclear weapons or biological or chemical weapons.” He has also said, tying into something previously mentioned, that
“I don't think there's any such thing as the ability to easily use a tactical nuclear weapon and not end up with Armageddon.” He also said that Russia's army is greatly "Underperforming." If Putin decides to take his chances with a nuclear war then NATO will most likely step in. This could cause a third world war.

Just like last year we had the same festival but this year something is different, parents have to come and supervise their kids.

"I think it is complemplety dumb people over 18 have to come. It is an after school event so there so be no parents. Lasts year was fun so fun without adults." Said 8th grader Abby Harlor. More of the students I talked about this said they won't go due to this rule, almost like a silent protest. "So I can understand why we have to have a parent come, I just don't think many kids will show up because of it. It's almost like a dog park." Said a member of hope.

What could have caused this rule? Why where parents required this year? Many students are upset with this decision.

Friday October 28. The most anticipated day of the week. This afternoon at 4:30 the 7th and 8th grade volleyball teams will be facing Beulah’s favorite teachers, consisting of Dr..Clark, Mr.Kuhns, Mr. Goble (ect.)

Now as of this morning after listening to the teachers thoughts about the game, it doesn't seem as if they're taking this lightly.

“Ava Dickson, Emily White i'm spiking the ball right at your face” Mr. Goble said

Dr. Clark even gave a “threatening” speech telling the volleyball players to watch out and be ready for the teachers' skills. All this tension has caused a “rivalry” between the teams and tonight both teams will definitely put their all

into getting 50 points first.

In the end, no matter how hard each team plays there can only be one winner. The question is who will claim victory and who will have to hold the embarrassment of losing.

Friday afternoon at around 6 pm the volleyball game came to an end. After a long 3 set game with great plays from both sides, the students took the win.
Because the staff team was enraged after their loss they started accusing the students of cheating. Saying that they would have won but the "absurd amounts" of bad calls took their victory. But is this really true or is the staff team just mad at reality?

Poor Hygiene ⎯ A Growing Problem in Beulah Park

Hygiene is an essential for middle school. Being able to feel and smell good delivers confidence and definitely less gossip! In Beulah Park Middle School, many kids carry deodorant and perfume but some however, carry scents, and they aren’t too pleasant to the nose! Now we’re left with the question, “What should we do?”

In Mrs. Belcher’s AR, I decided to interview 3 people’s take on hygiene in the school and boy did I get some interesting takes!
My first interview was with Kenely who said this, “It’s nasty! It smells like a booty buthole in the hallways! Especially Mr.Reed’s room!” Then I went and asked Blaike what he thinks the school smells like and he says, “It smells horrible! It smells like dirty socks! Take a *cuss word* shower, like if you wanna have friends take a shower!” When I asked Ava how she feels about the cause of this scent she tells me, “They smell bad, it smells like sweat, nobody wears deodorant.” After getting these results I couldn't help but think, is the hygiene of Beulah Park seriously a problem that should be taken seriously? Should students be required to have some sort of hygiene product? Let’s talk to Ava again!

Ava claims that the main source might be coming from the sweat drenched room. ⎯Gym.
“Students should be required to wear deodorant right after gym class. That might lower the bad scent from the school.” Ava’s idea suggests that deodorant should be a requirement for children who come from gym, but what if that isn’t the only source of this poor scent? What if it's too late to figure out the problem? There are many opinions on students scent but I guess we’ll never know the real problem.

Hygiene is important for everyone and should definitely be enforced but how will we get everyone to do it? It must be an impossible task, but in the meantime, make sure to keep stinky scents down, and keep deodorants up!

❀Brea Blay❀

Part of their football field was in their neighbors yard. While playing he warned them to stay away from his car. While playing one of the boys scored a touchdown and celebrated near his car. While celebrating his touchdown the neighbor came outside and yelled at the boys for being near his car. After scolding them he asked them where they lived just incase they hit his car. After asking their was a silence then one of the boys, Gabe said

“ I live in Ohio” after saying this the neighbor talked about how it wasn't funny and said he was going to call the police. After this was said the boys grabbed all their stuff quickly and ran faster than they ever have. After the boys scattered across the neighborhood, several of them got lost, not being from the neighborhood.

Nathun Wades Brutal Beating On The Night Of October 22nd (written by Bowie Mundy)

On October 22nd, 2022, I had an eyewitness account of Nathun Wade getting into a heated argument with his mother that ended with him crying on the floor after being beaten with a Birkenstock shoe. I arrived at Nathun Wade's home at about 9:30 on the night of October 22nd. I entered his home with 3 other people Gunner Orahood, Landus Sok, and Nathun Wade/the victim. Upon entering I saw the victim's mother/ the perpetrator sitting on the couch with three other people, 2 boys which I would later learn were the victim's little brothers and a girl whom I later learned was Gunner’s sister and the victim's cousin. I took a seat at the kitchen table with Landus and Gunner as the victim went upstairs to shower. I had a nice time introducing myself to the victim's kind and funny brothers, his very loud and outgoing cousin, and his mother who seemed to be very kind. As the victim returned downstairs at about 9:50 he questioned his mother's opinions of me. She jokingly said “I don't like him” Nathun then responded in a joking tone “is it because he is white” the victim's mother did not take a liking to this remark and responded with a very serious “I'm gonna beat you up.” The victim then began approaching the perpetrator with his fists up repeating the phrase “Put your dukes up, squire.” This was the fatal mistake the victim made. The perpetrator then stood up and approached the victim at a running pace while taking off her Birkenstock shoe, she then pushed the victim over and hit him with her Birkenstock. This visibly left the victim wounded with a red mark where the hit landed. Was this morally okay? Should the perpetrator be charged for this “joke?”

I'm now going to interview the victim to see his thoughts.

“(Me)Is this a normal occurrence?” “(Nathun) No not really, I guess it depends”

“Do you think she should be charged for this?” “No, she is a great mother”

“Do you think you deserved this?” “Yes, I made a racial joke”

“Do you think this was a rational punishment” “Yes, she only hit me once, at least she didn't smack my girlfriend”

In Beulah Park Middle school students are choosing to fling their boogers on the walls of the right stairwell. It is quite a dastardly sight for the visitors and students that attend this very new school. It wasn't kept clean for any longer than one month and the janitors have decided to leave the walls dirty. That is a story for another day.
Evidence is pointing toward the 7th-grade boys. They are nasty, disrespectful and have zero respect for the brand-new school, along with the students within.
Why must they flick their boogers on the walls instead of simply blowing their noses? Will they ever learn simple respect and common courtesy?

On October 30th, 2022 the Columbus Blue Jackets faced the New Jersey Devils, and they suffer a 7-1 loss. Jackets fans have not been impressed with their performance this season, picking up some very good players this year. Johnny "Hockey" Gaudreau, is known to have the most points in the NHL 2021-2022 season and is helping CBJ get on the board during games, but it hasn't worked out too well for them having a 3-7-0 (W-L-OTL) record putting them in last of the Metropolitan Division of the eastern conference. What are the Blue Jackets doing wrong? What do they need to do to improve? Brad Larson needs to do something about that soon to get the CBJ into a better position for the season, the Blue Jackets have struggled the past few years, and didn't make it to the playoffs last year. The 5th line (The fans) will stay true to their team, and will keep cheering on the Jackets. It's still early in the 22-23 season, many more games are to come! CBJ can still pull through for this season! This is Riley Moore signing off!

Beulah Park fire drills are becoming more and more common. Are punishments still working to deter kids?

Here at Grove City's local Beulah Park Middle school fire drills are becoming a new kind of frequent. On a cold wet day some two weeks ago, students heading to wait for the bus were startled when the fire alarm sounded. Those bus riders and teachers that had not left yet had to wait outside for about 30 minutes in the cold. Someday soon after that, the fire alarm was also pulled but this time it was during 9th period. And on top of that, these fire drills do not even count toward the mandatory fire drills we have to do each month.

The more the fire alarm gets pulled it raises the question, are punishments really working to deter kids from pulling the fire alarm? If a student pulls the alarm they are usually suspended for around 10 days or two school weeks. Fire departments can even press charges for inciting panic. It has been proven that juvenile brains do not finish developing until sometime around their 20's. So, is this a case of some students just doing it for fun and not truly thinking of the consequences? Most students are aware of the automatic suspension and know there will be repercussions. Despite this, we still have fire drills every couple of weeks that are not planned. Considering all of this, students do not seem to care as much as many would hope. Is this a new generation of small thinkers or dumb people?

On Monday, October 24th, at Beulah Park Middle School, a girl who decides to stay unknown is on her phone walking back from the school bathrooms. Looking straight down at the device open on Snapchat Inc., and being unaware of the events happening around her. This leaves any opportunity open for disaster to strike. This student and many other peers have been experiencing this ongoing issue. Is social media taking over us?

What are some thoughts of the students?

Brea Blay, a Beulah Park Middle School student shares her thoughts on this issue.
[Brea] "Some of y'all's screen time is past 3h hours per day, it's almost like y'all don't eat or go outside. It's actually really scary how long people are on these devices."

Brea also addresses her thoughts on what will happen to the future of academics if this issue continues.
[Brea] "Soon people will soon unprioritized learning and move on to social media apps."

Brea and many other students against this situation share similar thoughts.

Academics and a student's personal life are very important. Do you ever sit and think about your future and realize the things you are learning in school won't help you achieve your goals? For example, you might ask yourself, "When am I going to need to know about the colonization of America if I want to be a mechanic?"

Well here are the opinions of some students from Beulah Park Middle School "Education can be education when educated properly."-Bob "I think learning things that were not gonna need in the future is ok." -Lucas Ramsey "It makes me annoyed spending 12 years in school to not have to use."-Rachel Eschbach "I think its stupid, they should teach us things like how to pay taxes, things for the real world unless its useless."-Brea Blay

January 20, 2020, was the first news to the public about the new virus going around Covid-19. During this hard time, people started to work at home or not be able to work at all. Around 9.7 million people were prevented from going to work and 168 million children globally could not go to school. For everyone, this was a big change. Leading to almost everyone having to change their work ethic. Or losing this motivation they had pre-covid. When the covid vaccine was finally created and given to people everyone started going back to work/school. Leading to many having to get ready and not do work/school in pajamas. During the aftermath of this many people started to experience burnout.

Burnout can take different forms for different people affecting a person physically, emotionally, or behaviorally. Burnout can cause frequent illness; disengagement and detachment; blunted effect; feelings of frustration, helplessness, hopelessness; and loss of motivation.

Around 52% of all workers in the U.S have said they have experienced burnout at some time in their life or are dealing with the problem now. People can deal with burnout in many ways but some of the most helpful are writing in a journal mindlessly not checking for spelling mistakes and writing whatever you feel most comfortable with. Finding your way to manage your time without cramming all your work at once. Or just finding someone you are comfortable talking to about your stress.

Disgusting school bathrooms- Fault of the students or staff? Ren Atkins

Students at Beulah are outraged at the bathroom situation at our school, specifically in the girls' bathrooms.

"I don't even go into them anymore because they're so disgusting," one girl said. "I went once in the second week of school and never came back."

As of November 4th, all of the sanitary disposal boxes in the 2nd-floor girls' restroom are near overflowing. The tampon and pad dispensers in every single bathroom in the building are broken, empty, or both. There is graffiti and wet toilet paper stuck to the stall doors, and many of the *brand-new* locks have been broken.

Do you think it's okay that the young women of our school have to use the bathroom in such a condition? It doesn't seem fair.
And we aren't alone in this thought either. An 8th-grade girl who chose to remain anonymous said to us "They don't care about us and it's just freakin gross. The staff is lazy and they don't feel a need to like, put effort into cleaning for us because they get their own personal nice bathrooms anyways."

But is it really the staff to blame? The student body loves Mr. Hartzel and he would never do that to us on purpose. Maybe the students just don't want to admit that they're the real culprits here.

Or is this new school really as bad as it seems?

At Beulah Park Middle School, the students are flinging their slimy orange boogers in the right stairwell. How do I know this? The 7th graders are obnoxious and nasty. They have no respect for our school or our fellow 8th graders. I have interviewed 2 fellow students, Chadwick Mckee and Omar Abdullahi.

This is what Omar had to say. "I noticed that many students are treating this school like it's been here for years, not like it's brand new. They didn't even go here last year. Brookpark last year was so bad. I was going through it."

Chadwick said this. "I think it's gross. I think it's rather trifling. This is why these kids are getting sick and getting so many diseases."

In my personal opinion, our new school is going through a rough time with these 7th graders. They naruto run down the halls, act like they own the place, and are overly obnoxious.

If you have any comments on this situation or would like to help the cause, please let us know. Save Beulah Park.

So many people are against bullying but it is yet to stop, the question is why? - Olivia Beeman

One out of every five students report being bullied or that they have been bullied at some point. Everyone says we should stop bullying. We can put posters up on the walls, spread acts of kindness, report to an adult when someone is being bullied. But it never seems to end. Even the people who say and do some of these things still bully people. Why?

Most bully others or spread negativity for some sort of benefit. Studies show that most want the conflict that comes along with it, or they are insecure about themselves and take it out on others to feel better about themselves. Other studies show it can be a result of being bullied themselves or abused.

Francis Galton once said, "... Nature is all a man brings himself into the world; nurture is every influence that affects him after his birth." If all a child knows is pain and suffering and abuse, they can tend to take it out on others like a repetitive cycle.

Although this doesn't justify bullying in any way, it shows the upbringing to what got them here. We shouldn't be as focused on punishing bullying, but rather making sure no one ever does in the future and that others can learn from their past mistakes.

Imagine you work in a group activity, and one person does all the work even though everyone is capable. Everyone working together is more efficient and benefits everyone equally. The same goes for stopping bullying.

You cannot be divided and share your opinion, it takes people to come together and share the voice they have to stop bullying.

There seems to be a big controversy going on in households I know of because most of the people I know own dogs. This controversy is whether or not their pet dogs should be allowed to get on furniture.

In many homes, cats rule and can sleep anywhere they want. Dogs seem to create more of an argument.

My grandfather thought dogs should stay off all furniture. My grandmother now says she thinks he might have been right. It was all cute to have a cuddly dog on the couch until it got muddy outside. And now that we own two big dogs, they can take up a lot of room on the couches.

We came to a compromise in the house that dogs stay off the beds and have only one couch that they are allowed to sleep on. It was kind of surprising how easy it was to teach the dogs that only one couch was allowed.

I talked to one woman in a store and she said that her family bought a cheap couch for her yellow lab to sleep on. It worked for them as the dog was cooperative.

I think the one couch rule works because the dogs are just happy they are allowed to get on any comfortable furniture, especially my old dog with arthritis.

Some people let their dogs sleep with them. That might sound inviting on a cold winter night, but to me the dog hair and smell on my sheets does not seem appealing.

Should there have to be an adult at the 2022 fall festival? - Abiagil Harlor

Every year Beulah Park/Brook Park middle school hosts a fall festival that celebrates the begging of fall! This is meant to be a fun event and has fun things to do. There is dancing, crafts, hanging out with your friends, food, etc.

despite all of these good things there seems to be one dilemma with this year's fall fest, and that is that many students that on the posters advertising this fun events it says "Must be accompanied by someone over the age of 18" for many students this was really a bummer and has unsettled many. I spoke too current student Mati and here is what she has to say:

"I think it it annoying that we have to bring a adult (someone over 18) to fall fest, because I feel like that takes away a lot of the fun. It is support too be a school event for students to enjoy and have fun and I think having your adult there with you takes away the point. There will be teachers there so why should our parents have to go?"

A lot of students are thinking the same things alongside Mati. With this also come confusion. most 8th graders should know that there was nobody over 18 needed to come with fall fest last year, so why this year?

What do you think? Should you adult have too go, or do you think it ruins the event?

Students and staff at Beulah park are forced to make difficult journeys to reach the new Beulah park building.

One student "says that the constriction workers don't even do anything".

In October something Chadwick McKee and his Grandma McKee were going to show choir practice when they saw the main entry road to enter the school was closed. Besides, there were other cars driving threw.

Grandma McKee chose to take matters into her own hands and take that road too but when she drove down the road both she and her grandchild were being examined like animals in the local zoo. Until this old crusty but hulk-built man of construction took matters into his own hands and walked in front of the car with his huge handout in front of the car and started yelling claiming we drove threw 2 roads blocked signs when clearly there were four " so he can't count" this led to my grandma explaining to why she was on the road which did not sit well with this man he yelled at her and then used profanity at us. "which is not to be said because I am a holy child" now this local grandma is a g and did not take this and used words that can't be said on this news report. This then leads to childish mocking.

After this, another construction worker puts a stick in front of our car and tells us good luck getting out saying that stick is federal property and if run over it is a fine " now if I was him I would not trap someone I want gone" he then proceed to call us both dumb the bad word for behind and made both me and my grandma there struggling to leave.

But really who is at fault the local grandma Mckee trying to deliver one of the few stars to show choir or the mean ugly construction man?
