Kamehameha battled Kiwala’o and others for the control of the city. He eventually succeeded and took control of the city and other territories nearby. Before his rule the islands would have been torn apart by competing western interests if not for Kamehameha. Today four commissioned statues stand to honor Kamehameha memory. On, June 11, Kamehameha Day, each of these statues  ceremoniously draped with flowers leito celebrate Kamehameha.
