Types of summative assessment by

1.	Please add any interesting types of assessment that you practice or have seen to this Padlet: We are wanting to collate a smorgasbord of ideas to inspire us to think more broadly than essay/lab report/MCQ. Variety on assessment type develops a broader range of transferrable skills and reduces the impact of a single type of assessment disadvantaging some learners

1000 words focussing on the 3 elements of my module: normal histology, pathology and tissue processing. Worked really well to link all aspects. Students started with a patient sample, described how they processed and stained the tissue and diagnosed a pathology (of their choice) using images from the virtual microscope and comparing pathological to normal. Transferrable skills were IT skills for diagrams/flowcharts, writing concisely, preparing figures and methodology etc

for the last few years we have run assessed project vivas 3-4 weeks before the project hand-in (i.e. year UG project). Students do a short powerpoint over Teams, followed by short Q&A. In our feedback (which we do as quickly as possible - a few days) we give students a "it is likely that your write-up would be better if you .....". So the viva is partly to gauge their knowledge of the project but also partly to help them. [informally we believe students appreciate this]

However, this may not help with large cohorts in terms of marking and feedback!

students work in teams to make a poster, each on a different set subtopic, online peer review of first draft of poster gives learning opportunity and improvement, each student prepares a 5 min recorded VoiceOver of their improved poster independently. Tutorial groups contain one student from each poster. Students listen to the recordings from all of their tutorial group members and write down 2 questions. In the tutorial each student must ask 1 question and answer 2, the academic facilitates this by selecting the first question asker, and inviting a volunteer second question. Overall, the students learn (i) critical analysis to improve their poster and that of others, (ii) how to ask and answer questions, (iv) do a short oral presentation, (v) do a poster, (vi) the knowledge embedded in all the subtopics. The scientific content, oral presentation and Q&A can all be assessed summatively, and the peer observation can include a mark component.
