Their social structure was based on their ancestry. They had three main ranks. The highest were aristocrats and chiefs, called the rangatira. These were the descendants of the oldest males of the generation. The middle class, or commoners, were called tutua. The lower class were slaves, called the taurekareka. They were storytellers, and knowledge was passed down through genealogies. The Europeans introduced muskets, disease, Western agricultural methods, whaling, sealing, and missionaries (people spreading religion).
