"A claim is a statement that you are asking the other person to accept" (Toulmin, 1969). Example: You should eat McDonald's.

"The grounds (or data) is the basis of real persuasion and is made up of data and hard facts, plus the reasoning behind the claim" (Toulmin, 1969). Example: McDonald's delivers 100% happiness via Happy Meals.

In order to successfully follow the Toulmin Argument, it lucrative to create a claim with unarguable grounds.

Warrant and Qualifier: Burger and French Fries are King

"A warrant may be explicit or implicit, but in either case, says David Hitchcock, the warrant is not the same as the premise" (Nordquist, 2019). Example: Happy Meals have the word happy in its name.

"The qualifier (or modal qualifier) indicates the strength of the leap from the data to the warrant and may limit how universally the claim applies" (Toulmin, 1969). Example: McDonald's is always delicious.

Upon completion of writing the claim and grounds, develop them further with the warrant and qualifier. The warrant serves as a bridge to the claim and grounds allowing for a stronger or weaker argument. Never forget the qualifier because this reveals writings the level of quality.

Baking and Rebuttal: Napkins are amazing and unfortunately, some people prefer hot dogs over burgers

"The backing (or support) for an argument gives additional support to the warrant by answering different questions" (Toulmin, 1969). Example: McDonald's are widely available.

"Despite the careful construction of the argument, there may still be counter-arguments that can be used" (Toulmin, 1969). Example: Burger King is better.

By including additional support to the warrant, the claim can answer questions not thought of initially. Backing is king. Anyone can create a great argument, but no one can avoid a counter. Counters are always going to present themselves. Embrace the rebuttal.
