A Road Flooding Fix for a California State Park by Hunter Hua

Flooding from rain and extreme high tides often leaves the road to San Francisco's China Camp State Park inaccessible. So a diverse group of stakeholders, with support from NOAA’s Science Collaborative team, proposed raising the road.

The problem at this state park is that with the winter's extreme high tides and heavy rainfall that combine with the sea levels, rise to flood the only roadway into the park making it undriveable. These flood events also threaten marsh habitat and block emergency services from reaching bayside neighborhoods.

The two solutions that NOAA's Science Collaborative, San Francisco Bay National Estuarine Research Reserve, California State Parks, and Marin County Department of Public works came up with were to raise the most vulnerable road section using solid fill whiel improving the marsh's ability to handle and distribute water flow or to raise the most vulnerable road section via a pile-supported causeway. Both of these solutions have their pros and cons.

What is still being done or what challenges are being faced

This project has now been finished so there is not much being done now besides maintaining what has already been built. However, some challenges along the way could be trying to develop solutions for tidal road flooding which would've been very complex and understanding the tidal waves pattern to make sure that the marsh stays okay and the roads are not to flood again after today.
