He started his military career as a cadet when he was 11 years old. He fought for the king and fought against the British, Portuguese, and France. In 1811 he became a lieutenant colonel. In 1814 he was appointed to the commander of the Northern Army.  In January 1817 he lead his army into Chile for a surprise attack against the Spanish forces. On July 28, 1821 he proclaimed Peru's independence from Spain. The main point is he helped lead the revolution against Spanish rule in Argentina, Chile, and Peru. There were the Peninsulares, Creoles, Mestizos, and the Indians. Peninsulares were people who were born in spain and they held the highest jobs. They were in control of the government, church, and owned large amounts of land. Creoles were people born in the the Americas to Spanish parents. They were wealthy and well educated. They also owned farms and practiced law, and could not get the jobs that were reserved for Peninsulares. Mestizos were the next class of people. They were a mix of Indian and Spanish. They worked on farms that were owned by the people in higher social classes, or if they lived in the city they would be carpenters, shoe makers, tailors, and bakers. Indians were the lowest social class, the Spanish treated them terribly.
