SHOOTING THE MOON
By Frances O’Roark Dowell
In the book I am reading, the main character, Jamie, has a brother named TJ. He has gone to war in Vietnam and she is always thinking about him. Her father, the Colonel, is a supporter of the Army all the way, but when Jamie sees him, he is mostly quiet ever since TJ said over dinner that instead of going to college, he would go to war. Jamie thinks that her father should be all over the fact, but strangely….not.
After Jamie’s brother goes to war and is shipped off to Vietnam, he has been sending letters of boring stuff to Jamie’s parents, but to her, he is sending camera film. Where I am reading, she is learning to develop the film and is finding not a lot of interest in the film, but us getting the knack to teach other soldiers. I give this book a 10 because it shows me all about the worries and lives of Army families.
My favorite part so far is when Jamie is playing cards with Private Hollister, someone she meets, and she pretends she doesn’t know how to play rummy, the game they were playing. Then, she beat the pants off of the Private. It was really funny.
